Chapter 8 - The Napa Sanctuary

The Romano estate in the Napa Valley was a sprawling sanctuary of ancient olive trees, rolling vineyards, and stone villas bathed in golden afternoon sunlight.

It was a world away from the cold Pacific Ocean and the chaotic corporate towers of San Francisco.

Lena walked through the rose gardens behind the main villa, wearing a simple sundress, her bare feet touching the warm grass. Beside her walked Rosa Romano—Matteo's eighty-two-year-old grandmother, a formidable woman with sharp dark eyes and silver hair pulled into an elegant knot.

Rosa stopped near a stone fountain, leaning on her polished olive-wood cane, looking at Lena with keen evaluation.

"Matteo told me you brought down Arthur Russo with a single spreadsheet," Rosa said, her voice rich with a thick Italian accent.

"I only organized the facts, Mrs. Romano," Lena replied modestly. "Arthur Russo brought himself down with his own greed."

"Call me Nonna," Rosa commanded gently, a small smile appearing on her lips. "For five years, my grandson brought women to this estate who looked at our paintings, our wine cellars, and our name as if they were shopping in a boutique. They didn't care about Matteo. They cared about the shadow he cast."

She reached out, taking Lena's hand in her warm, weathered palm.

"When Matteo brought you here on Friday," Nonna Rosa continued softly, "he didn't look at you like a partner or a trophy. He looked at you the way my husband looked at me when we built our first shipping dock in Genoa with nothing in our pockets but hard work and faith."

Lena felt a lump form in her throat. "I love him, Nonna. Not the empire, not the ships. Just Matteo."

"I know, child," Rosa smiled, patting her hand. "Which is why you are the first woman in ten years who belongs in this house."

That evening, as the sun dipped behind the Mayacamas Mountains, casting a deep crimson glow over the vineyards, Matteo and Lena sat on the wide stone terrace, sipping dark wine from the estate's private cellar.

Matteo wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against his side as the cool night air began to settle over the valley.

"Nonna gave you her blessing," Matteo noted with a soft laugh. "She told me if I let you leave, she's leaving her shares of the estate to you instead of me."

"She’s a very smart woman," Lena teased, resting her head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

"She is," Matteo agreed softly, his hand slipping into his coat pocket. "And so am I."
