Chapter 9 - The Promise at Dawn

The ocean had brought them together, and it was to the ocean they returned.
A year after the night on Deck Eleven, Matteo and Lena stood on the top deck of a private yacht anchored in a quiet cove off the coast of Big Sur. The morning mist was burning off the water, revealing dramatic cliffs covered in green pines rising sharply from the crashing waves.
There were no reporters, no corporate board members, and no political guests. Only Nonna Rosa, Marcus, Sarah, and a few close friends sat on the simple wooden chairs arranged on the deck.
Lena wore a gown of breathtaking white silk—simple, elegant, and timeless, flowing around her like sea foam in the morning breeze. She held a small bouquet of white roses and lavender.
Matteo stood before her in a dark navy suit, his amber eyes bright with an overwhelming love that left no room for the cold, dangerous man the world knew him to be.
Father D’Angelo, an elderly priest from the Napa parish, smiled at them as he held open the leather-bound book.
"Matteo Romano," the priest spoke softly into the quiet morning air. "Do you take Lena Carter to be your wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, until death do you part?"
Matteo took Lena's hands in his, his fingers strong, warm, and steady.
"I take you, Lena," Matteo spoke, his voice deep, clear, and ringing across the quiet water. "Not because of fortune or fate, but because you showed me what truth looks like in a world built on shadows. I promise to protect you, to honor you, and to stand beside you as your equal for all the days of my life."
The priest turned to Lena. "Lena Carter, do you take Matteo Romano to be your wedded husband?"
Lena looked up into the face of the man who had asked why she was on the floor when the rest of the world was looking for someone to blame.
"I take you, Matteo," Lena said, tears of pure joy glistening in her dark eyes. "I promise to love you, to trust you, and to build a life with you where no truth is ever hidden and no shadow can ever touch us."
Matteo slipped a simple band of platinum and black diamonds onto her finger—a matching band to the one she placed on his hand.

"By the power vested in me," Father D’Angelo smiled, "I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder."
Matteo leaned down, pulling Lena into a deep, breathtaking kiss that made the whole world vanish around them, leaving only the sound of the ocean and the warmth of their united souls.
