Chapter 6 - The New Architect

Six months later, the corporate headquarters of the Romano Enterprises in downtown San Francisco was a bustling hub of activity.

The grand glass-and-steel skyscraper overlooked the bay, but inside the top floor, the atmosphere had undergone a radical transformation. Where cold corporate fear once ruled, a culture of transparency, fair wages, and meticulous ethics had taken root under Lena Carter’s leadership as Chief Executive Director.

Lena sat at the head of the mahogany conference table in a tailored cream suit, reviewing the quarterly reports for the newly restructured Maritime Foundation.

Beside her sat Marcus, Matteo's chief security officer, and three senior board members who had once looked down on her during her time aboard the vessel.

"The new wage structures for the service staff across all twelve luxury liners went into effect on the first of the month," Lena informed the board, her voice calm, commanding, and absolute. "Operational efficiency has increased by twenty-four percent, and turnover has dropped to zero."

"Miss Carter," one of the older board members spoke up, bowing his head respectfully. "The board was initially skeptical of the expenditure, but the financial returns have proven your strategy entirely correct. You have saved us millions in recruitment and security costs."

"Fair treatment is not an expenditure, Mr. Vance," Lena corrected him gently with a sharp, professional smile. "It is an investment. When people are respected, they protect the house they work in."

The double doors of the conference room opened softly, and Matteo stepped inside.

He was wearing a dark grey suit, but his attention wasn't on the financial charts or the board members. His amber eyes locked onto Lena with an open, quiet pride that made her heart swell every time he entered a room.

"Gentlemen," Matteo said, gesturing to the door. "The meeting is adjourned. My director has an appointment."

The board members gathered their papers quickly, offering polite nods to Lena before exiting the room.

When the doors clicked shut, Matteo walked around the table, leaning down to place a warm kiss on the top of Lena's head.

"You're late for lunch, Director," he whispered against her hair.

"I was busy fixing the retirement fund your previous board neglected for five years," Lena replied, turning in her chair to look up at him, wrapping her arms around his waist. "It takes time to undo thirty years of corporate greed."

"You've undone it in six months," Matteo said softly, touching her cheek. "My grandmother wants us at the estate in Napa this weekend. She says she wants to meet the woman who made her grandson stop working eighteen hours a day."

Lena smiled up at him, her eyes shining with warmth. "Napa sounds wonderful, Matteo. But first, I have a stop to make."
