Chapter 3 - Ambush on Deck Four

The lower service decks of the Empress of the Seas were a maze of exposed pipes, roaring ventilation shafts, and narrow steel corridors. The luxury of the upper decks vanished down here, replaced by the harsh glare of industrial fluorescent lighting and the smell of heavy diesel fuel.

Lena moved silently behind Matteo, her rubber-soled work shoes gripping the wet steel floor. Two of Matteo's elite security guards walked ahead, weapons drawn and fitted with suppressors.

"The communications control room is just beyond the main engine bulkhead," Lena whispered, checking the digital schematic on her handheld tablet. "If Russo's men are wiping the drives, the server bay temperature will spike."

"They won't get the chance," Matteo said softly.

As they rounded the corner toward the heavy steel blast doors of Deck Four, three sharp cracks echoed through the narrow hallway. Bullets ricocheted off the steel walls, sending sparks flying through the damp air.

Matteo instantly pulled Lena behind a reinforced support pillar, his body shielding hers completely against the cold steel. He drew his own custom sidearm from his shoulder holster with smooth, practiced lethal efficiency.

"Stay down!" Matteo commanded, his voice cold as iron.

"There are three of them!" Lena gasped, peering around his arm. "They're wearing private security uniforms—Russo's men!"

"Marcus, flank left!" Matteo ordered into his radio. "Take out the power junction!"

Before the guard could respond, the overhead lights flickered once and died completely, plunging the lower corridor into pitch darkness. Night-vision green flares ignited down the hallway as Russo's mercenaries opened fire blindly.

Lena didn't panic. In the dark, her eighteen months of memorizing every inch of the ship's maintenance layout kicked in.

"Matteo!" she pulled on his sleeve. "The secondary conduit pipe behind us leads into the ventilation crawlspace above their heads! It opens directly over the server rack!"

Matteo looked down at her in the green glow of the emergency lights, a fierce, dark smile spreading across his face. "Lead the way."

Crawling through the narrow, hot ductwork, Lena moved with agile precision. Matteo followed directly behind her heavy frame, his presence an absolute wall of protection. Through the steel grate below, they could see Arthur Russo's chief security officer desperately plugging a flash drive into the main server, trying to initiate a remote wipe.

"He's destroying the evidence!" Lena whispered.

Matteo didn't hesitate. He kicked the heavy steel grate loose. It crashed down directly onto the officer's head, knocking him unconscious instantly.

Matteo dropped through the opening like a predator, landing softly on his feet. Within seconds, he disarmed the remaining mercenary in the room with two swift, brutal blows, slamming him against the main server rack.

Lena dropped down behind him, rushing straight to the illuminated control panel.

"Ten seconds left on the wipe protocol," she said, her fingers flying across the touch screen. "I'm overriding the sequence with the master Romano key!"

She jammed the gold serpent key into the manual slot. The red warning lights on the server rack flickered, turned yellow, and finally settled into a steady, brilliant blue.

DOWNLOAD COMPLETE, the screen flashed.

Lena let out a long, shuddering breath, slumping slightly against the console. "We got it. Every wire transfer, every offshore account, every bribe Arthur Russo ever paid."

Matteo walked over to her, stepping over the unconscious guard on the floor. He reached out, taking her face gently in both hands, his eyes searching hers with intense relief.

"Are you hurt?" he asked softly.

"I'm fine," Lena breathed, looking up at him in the dim blue light of the servers. "Just... a little tired of running through hallways."

Matteo’s thumbs brushed over her cheekbones. "You saved the firm, Lena. You saved me from a marriage that would have destroyed everything my family built."

May you like

"I just wanted to clear my name," she murmured.

"You did much more than that," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a tender murmur as his head leaned down, his lips brushing hers in a soft, promise-filled kiss that made the cold steel room feel suddenly warm.
