Chapter 6 - The Smoking Gun
The courtroom erupted into a flurry of whispers. Elena’s face drained of all color, her manicured fingers digging into the edge of the defense table until her knuckles turned white.
Maria opened her briefcase and projected a series of digitized documents onto the courtroom's large electronic screen.
“Exhibit A,” Maria stated calmly, pointing a laser at a highlighted signature. “These are the original trust fund formation documents from six years ago. Notice the signature of the secondary trustee. It appears to be Arthur Vance. However, forensic analysis proves the signature was forged using a digital tracer purchased online—shipped directly to Elena’s private boutique address.”
Judge Whitaker leaned forward, narrowing his eyes as he examined the data. “Go on, Ms. Santos.”
“Exhibit B,” Maria continued, flipping to the next slide, which detailed the bank transfers. “Over the last twenty-four months, every single dollar pulled from Leo Vance’s trust did not go toward family business expenses. It went directly to pay off mounting gambling debts and secret real estate acquisitions held by Elena’s brother, who fled the jurisdiction yesterday morning.”

Elena shrieked, jumping up from her seat. “It’s a lie! She’s a lying peasant who stole my husband! She hacked those files!”
“Quiet down or I will have you removed in handcuffs, Mrs. Vance!” Judge Whitaker bellowed, slamming his gavel down hard. He looked back at Maria, then down at the staggering stack of evidence. “The court accepts these exhibits into the permanent record. Furthermore, based on these findings, all motions for spousal maintenance filed by the petitioner are hereby denied with prejudice. I am ordering a full criminal referral for grand larceny and forgery.”
