Chapter 7 - The Dust Settles
By sunset, the storm had broken. Elena’s legal team officially abandoned her case by late afternoon, realizing that defending her against federal-level financial fraud was a losing battle. Stripped of her access to the Vance accounts and facing an imminent indictment, Elena packed what little she could carry and fled the city to stay with distant relatives who wanted nothing to do with her scandals.
Back at the Vance estate, the heavy gloom that had hung over the halls for months was completely gone.
Arthur sat at the grand piano in the parlor, watching his son, Leo, happily building Lego blocks on the plush rug near the fireplace. Maria stood by the French doors, looking out at the twilight gardens, breathing in the fresh evening air.
Arthur walked over, holding two cups of hot tea, and extended one toward her.
“You didn't have to do all that today, Maria,” Arthur said softly, his voice filled with a deep, quiet gratitude. “You could have just walked away with your final paycheck the night she fired you.”

Maria took the mug, her fingers brushing against his. She offered a gentle, knowing smile. “I wasn't just protecting your assets, Arthur. I was protecting a home that finally felt safe. Leo deserves a childhood free of greed and fear.”
Arthur looked down into her eyes, realizing in that exact moment that the woman standing before him wasn't just an exceptional caretaker or a brilliant legal mind—she was the heart that had brought his broken house back to life.
