Chapter 3 - CHAPTER 2: THE ENEMY’s WEAKNESS

I retreated silently back upstairs, locking the guest room door behind me. My mind was racing, connecting pieces of a puzzle I hadn't realized I was building.

Damon had married me four years ago, right as my father’s logistics company was absorbed by Vance Enterprises. At the time, I thought it was romance. Now I realized my father's shares—which had been placed in my name after his passing—were the exact leverage the Vance family needed to secure majority voting rights in their firm.

They needed me calm, ignorant, and cooperative until the final asset transfer went through.

I pulled out my laptop and opened an encrypted cloud storage account. First, I uploaded every photo I had taken in the bedroom four hours earlier: the spotless shirt, the champagne-colored lace with the blue charm, the closet door, the manicured hand, and Owen’s engagement ring gleaming in the dark.

Then I exported the house security logs showing Claire’s six hidden visits over the past three months.

Finally, I recorded the audio from my phone's camera feed, capturing Victor’s conversation about the five-million-dollar trust transfer and their scheme to claim emotional instability against me.

"You picked the wrong mother to target," I whispered to the dark room.

My phone buzzed. It was a text from Damon.

“Hey sweetie, meeting ran late. How are you feeling? Did the water help? I’m picking up that organic soup you like on my way home.”

The fake concern made my stomach turn, but I forced my fingers to type back a sweet reply.

“Feeling much better! Just taking a warm bath. See you soon, babe.”

I needed an ally. Not a friend—because my best friend was currently conspiring with my husband—but a predator who knew how to hunt wolves.

I dialed a number I had saved two years ago after a corporate charity gala.

The line rang three times before a sharp, poised woman answered.

"Victoria Sterling."

Victoria Sterling was the most feared family law attorney in the state. She specialized in high-conflict, high-net-worth divorces and was famous for leaving crooked millionaires penniless. More importantly, she hated the Vance family; Victor Vance had lost a major corporate suit against her three years ago.

"Victoria," I said, my voice steady and firm. "My name is Evelyn Vance. I have evidence of marital fraud, asset hiding, corporate conspiracy, and an illicit affair involving my husband, his brother, and my best friend."

There was a short pause on the line. I heard the rustle of papers, followed by the quiet click of a pen.

"I’m listening, Mrs. Vance," Victoria said, her tone suddenly razor-sharp.

"I need you to help me burn their kingdom down," I replied. "And I need to do it before sunrise."
