Three months later.
The high-rise courtroom in downtown was packed for the final sentencing hearing of the Vance Enterprises fraud trial.
Victor Vance was convicted of multiple counts of wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, forgery, and conspiracy. He was sentenced to eighteen years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. His personal fortune was seized to pay full restitution to the company’s shareholders and logistics trust.
Owen Miller received a seven-year sentence for tax fraud and corporate money laundering, his accounting license permanently revoked.
Claire, while escaping prison time due to her cooperation with prosecutors regarding Owen's shell accounts, was ordered to pay heavy civil penalties for her role in the financial conspiracy. Her reputation ruined, she sold her apartment and left the city under a cloud of public disgrace.
And Damon.
Because he had turned against Victor at the final moment, alerted me to the fraudulent power-of-attorney transfer, and called the paramedics when I was in distress, the court granted him a reduced sentence of probation and community service for his secondary role in the financial filings.
However, the family court judge issued a complete, absolute divorce decree in my favor.
I was awarded 100% of my father’s logistics shares, full legal and physical custody of our child, and a substantial monthly child support order drawn directly from Damon’s remaining court-supervised trust fund.
As the judge slammed the gavel down, ending the long, painful chapter of my marriage, Damon looked across the courtroom at me one last time.

He didn't ask for a second chance. He didn't ask for forgiveness. He simply nodded silently, tears rolling down his cheeks, accepting the consequences of the choices he had made.
I stood up, adjusted my coat, and walked out of the courtroom beside Victoria, leaving the ruins of the Vance family behind me forever.
