Chapter 5 - CHAPTER 4: THE BOARDROOM SURPRISE

The glass doors of Vance Enterprises shone under the morning sun.
At 8:45 a.m., Damon, Victor, and Owen sat around the mahogany conference table on the thirty-fourth floor. They had coffees in hand, chatting easily as their corporate notary organized the thick stacks of asset transfer documents.
Damon had sent me three texts that morning: “Hope you slept well, sweetie!” “Taking care of some boring paperwork at the office today.” “Love you both so much!”
I stood in the executive elevator beside Victoria and two uniformed court officers, watching the floor numbers light up. I wore a tailored black maternity dress, my hair pulled back into a sleek, professional knot, the ultrasound picture safely tucked inside my leather folder.
When the elevator doors chimed open on the thirty-fourth floor, the receptionist stood up to stop us, but Victoria brushed past her with practiced authority.
Victoria pushed open the double doors of the main boardroom.
Damon was holding a pen, mid-signature on the final page of the five-million-dollar trust deed. Victor was sitting beside him, gesturing toward the signature line. Owen was typing on his laptop at the end of the table.
Every head turned toward the door.
Damon’s pen froze. His face drained of color so fast I thought he might pass out right onto the mahogany table.
"Evelyn?" Damon stammered, stepping back from his chair. "What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be at home resting!"
Victor stood up slowly, his eyes narrowing as he spotted Victoria Sterling standing beside me. "Sterling. What is the meaning of this intrusion? This is a private corporate meeting."
"It was a private meeting, Victor," Victoria said smoothly, stepping into the room and tossing a thick stack of legal filings onto the center of the table. "Until it became the crime scene of a major marital fraud and asset-stripping conspiracy."
Owen slammed his laptop shut, looking nervously toward the exit. "This is absurd. Evelyn, you’re confused—"
"Shut your mouth, Owen," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a whip.
I walked up to the table, picked up the champagne-colored lace camisole I had brought in a sealed plastic bag, and dropped it right in front of Damon.
Alongside it, I tossed six high-resolution photographs taken from my bedroom four hours earlier.
"You dropped this under our upholstered bench yesterday while Claire was hiding in my closet," I said, leaning over the table, my eyes locked onto Damon's trembling gaze. "And don't worry about coffee stains, Damon. The shirt in the photo was spotless."
Damon looked at the photos, then at Victor, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "Evelyn... I can explain... Claire was just... she was helping me pick out a gift for you—"
"Save it, Damon," I interrupted, pulling out my phone and pressing play on the external speaker.
Victor’s recorded voice blasted through the boardroom speakers: “I don't give a damn about Damon’s marriage, Owen... What I care about is the five million dollars in commercial assets... Once the restructuring is finished, Damon files for divorce on grounds of emotional instability, claims full custody of the baby, and Evelyn leaves with nothing.”
The room fell into absolute, suffocating silence.

Victor’s calm demeanor completely cracked. He glared at Owen, then turned to me, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.
"As of eight o'clock this morning," Victoria announced, gesturing to the court officers, "a temporary restraining order and an emergency financial injunction have been placed on all Vance Enterprises holding accounts. Mr. Vance, Mr. Victor Vance, and Mr. Owen Miller are hereby served."
