Chapter 9 - CHAPTER 8: THE RACE AGAINST TIME

I was rushed to Saint Jude Women's Hospital—the very facility where I had received my ultrasound two months earlier.
The doctors quickly stabilized me, confirming that the pain was caused by severe stress and early Braxton-Hicks contractions, not full labor. The baby's heart rate was strong, but I was ordered to remain on strict bed rest.
From my hospital bed, with an IV line in my arm, I coordinated the final counter-strike against Victor Vance.
Victoria stood beside my bed, her laptop open, connected directly to the Federal Prosecutor’s task force.
"Victor is currently at his private estate in the hills," Victoria informed me. "His private jet is fueled and waiting at the executive airport in San Jose. He plans to execute the fraudulent power-of-attorney transfer at midnight."
"Can we stop the upload?" I asked, looking at the clock on the wall. It was 11:15 p.m.
"We can't stop the internet upload remotely without the master override key," Victoria said. "And the only person who holds that override key is the legal owner of the primary logistics trust."
"Which is me," I said, sitting up straight despite the doctor's warnings.
"Evelyn, you can't go there—" Victoria started.
"I don't need to go there," I said, pulling out my father’s old encrypted flash drive from my purse. "My father built a remote revocation protocol into the trust software ten years ago. He always said: 'If a partner tries to steal the keys to the house, you don't fight them in the hallway—you change the locks from the foundation.'"
I plugged the flash drive into Victoria's laptop.
Using my biometric thumbprint and the unique serial number from my father's stock certificates, I accessed the master control server of the Vance-Logistics portal.
At 11:55 p.m., a progress bar appeared on the laptop screen: VICTOR VANCE INITIATING ASSET TRANSFER — 85% COMPLETE.
"He's five minutes away from executing the sale," Victoria warned.
My fingers flew across the keyboard, entering the emergency revocation code my father had recorded on the video tape years ago.
A red prompt flashed across the screen: CONFIRM COMPLETE TERMINATION OF CORPORATE POWER OF ATTORNEY FOR VICTOR VANCE?
I looked at the ultrasound picture pinned to the hospital wall beside my bed.
"For my daughter," I whispered, and hit ENTER.
May you like
At 11:58 p.m., the screen flashed bright green: ALL POWER OF ATTORNEY REVOKED. ALL OFFSHORE TRANSFERS BLOCKED. FEDERAL INJUNCTION ACTIVATED.
Miles away, at Victor’s private estate, federal agents smashed through the front gates just as his computer screen locked him out forever.
