Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 3: THE MAPLE STREET SAFEHOUSE

At midnight, while Damon was fast asleep beside an empty space on our bed—believing I was sleeping peacefully in the guest room due to my pregnancy discomfort—I packed a single suitcase.

I didn't take jewelry or designer clothes. I took my legal documents, my father’s stock certificates, my medical records, and the ultrasound photo of my baby girl.

At 1:30 a.m., a non-descript black sedan pulled up into the alley behind our garage. I slipped out the side door without triggering the alarm, using a override code I had quietly decoded from Victor’s master access log.

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in the high-rise office of Victoria Sterling, overlooking the glowing skyline of downtown.

Victoria sat across from me in a tailored ivory blazer, reviewing the drive containing my evidence. As she scrolled through the photos, listened to Victor’s recorded phone call, and analyzed the financial logs, a slow, predatory smile spread across her lips.

"This is breathtakingly stupid of them," Victoria murmured, tapping the screen where Victor discussed the five-million-dollar trust. "Victor Vance is usually meticulous, but his arrogance got the better of him. They thought you were just a helpless, pregnant housewife who would swallow whatever story they fed you."

"Can they take my daughter?" I asked, my voice cracking for the first time all night. "Victor said they were going to claim I was emotionally unstable."

Victoria leaned forward, placing her hands on the desk. "Evelyn, look at me. They can try. But with this audio recording, any judge in this state will see their 'instability' claim for exactly what it is: a fabricated ploy to pull off financial extortion. You are clear-headed, you are documented, and you are prepared."

She pulled out a thick blue folder.

"Tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, Victor and Damon plan to sign the asset transfer documents at Vance Enterprises headquarters," Victoria explained. "They believe you are sitting at home, resting. Instead, we are going to file an emergency freeze on all Vance Enterprises holding accounts based on spousal fraud and corporate embezzlement."

"What about Claire and Owen?" I asked.

Victoria’s eyes glinted with icy satisfaction. "Owen runs a boutique accounting firm that manages several Vance subsidiaries. He’s not just Claire’s fiancé; he’s the one helping Victor launder those assets through offshore shells. Tomorrow morning, we aren't just filing for divorce, Evelyn. We are dropping a bomb on their entire network."

"Where do I stay tonight?" I asked.

"I have a private, secure townhouse on Maple Street," Victoria said, handing me a set of brass keys. "No one knows about it. You rest, you eat, and you take care of that little girl inside you. Tomorrow, the hunt begins."
