Chapter 6 - CHAPTER 5: CORNERED FOXES

The aftermath in the boardroom was instant chaos.
Victor pulled out his phone, frantically trying to reach his corporate bank managers, only to realize his accounts were already frozen. Owen grabbed his briefcase and tried to slip past the court officers, but Victoria handed him a separate subpoena for corporate tax fraud.
Damon rushed around the table toward me, his hands raised in desperation.
"Evelyn, please!" he begged, tears actually brimming in his eyes. "They pushed me into this! Victor said we were losing control of the firm! He said if we didn't transfer your father's shares, the board would kick us out! I love you! I love our baby!"
I looked down at the man I had loved for four years. The handsome, charming husband had dissolved into a cowardly weakling who blamed his brother the moment he got caught.
"You let your mistress hide in my closet while I was holding an ultrasound of your daughter, Damon," I said, my tone ice-cold. "You didn't care about me. You didn't care about our child. You cared about money and your own cowardly comfort."
"It was Claire!" Damon yelled, pointing a finger wildly into the air. "She’s the one who kept coming over! She manipulated me! She told me you were getting suspicious!"
At that exact moment, the boardroom door opened again.
Claire stood in the doorway, holding a box of pastries she had brought for what she thought was a celebration breakfast with Damon and Owen. She wore a soft pink coat, her nails freshly manicured in the exact shade I had seen clutching my maternity coat in the closet.
She froze, looking at the court officers, the photos spread across the table, and Damon yelling her name.
"Damon?" Claire whispered, her face going bright red. "What's happening?"
I walked up to Claire, stopping just inches from her face. She stepped back, looking at my bump, then at my eyes.
"Twelve years, Claire," I said quietly. "You stood beside me when my father died. You cried with me when I got the positive pregnancy test. And all the while, you were sneaking into my house using a private code, sleeping with my husband in my bed."
"Evelyn... I... I was going to tell you—" Claire stuttered, her eyes darting toward Owen for help.
Owen didn't even look at her. He was busy arguing with his lawyer on the phone, completely throwing her to the wolves just as Damon had done seconds earlier.
"Look at them, Claire," I said, gesturing to the three men in the room who were now screaming at each other over ruined bank accounts and impending criminal charges. "These are the men you sold your soul for. They didn't love you. You were just an accessory in their fraudulent game."
Claire looked at Owen, then at Damon, realization sinking in as tears began spilling down her face. She had ruined her life, her engagement, and her reputation for men who didn't even care enough to defend her.
"Hand over your keycard and your security code to my house," I commanded.
With shaking fingers, Claire reached into her purse, pulled out the duplicate house key, and dropped it into my hand without saying another word.

I turned back to Damon, Victor, and Owen.
"I'll see you all in court," I said.
