Chapter 2 - The Plunge into the Abyss

The impact was deafening.

The safety glass didn't shatter—it spiderwebbed into a millions of tiny, opaque cracks, the electronic keypad exploding in a shower of sparks and blue smoke.

Outside, the glass beneath Chloe gave a final, sickening shriek.

"Martha, let go!" Chloe screamed as the central pane shattered completely into thousands of tempered dice. "You'll fall too!"

"Never!" Martha roared.

The floor disappeared beneath Chloe’s feet. She plunged into the open air, her body dropping four feet before the wool scarf snapped taut.

Martha’s upper body was jerked violently over the edge. Her ribs slammed into the steel perimeter beam with a sickening crunch, the breath exploding from her lungs. But her hands, wrapped four times around the wool scarf, held.

Chloe hung over the seventy-story abyss, suspended only by a strip of hand-knitted wool and the bleeding hands of a sixty-two-year-old woman. The icy wind howled around them, twisting Chloe’s silk dress as she kicked wildly, trying to find a foot-hold against the sheer concrete face of the skyscraper.

"Julian!" Chloe shrieked, her knuckles white as she clung to the lower loop of the scarf.

Inside, Julian threw his body against the cracked glass door. The shattered glass gave way, raining heavy fragments onto the living room floor. Julian tumbled out onto the windy terrace, ignoring the glass slicing into his hands and legs.

"Chloe!" he screamed.

He sprinted across the concrete perimeter, dropping to his knees beside Martha just as the old woman’s grip began to slip on the blood-slick wool.

Julian reached down into the void, grabbing Chloe’s forearms with a desperate, iron grip. His muscles strained, his boots digging into the concrete seam as he pulled his heavy, pregnant wife upward against the gale.

"I’ve got you! I’ve got you, baby!" Julian sobbed, his voice cracking with emotion.

With a final, desperate heave, Julian dragged Chloe over the steel lip, pulling her into his lap against the solid concrete floor. Martha collapsed beside them, clutching her broken ribs, gasping for air.

Chloe buried her face in Julian’s neck, her body shaking hysterically as she sobbed. "She tried to kill us... Julian, she broke the glass..."

Julian wrapped his arms around his wife and unborn child, his forehead pressed against Chloe’s wet hair. Tears of horror and relief streamed down his face. "I know. I saw it. I'm so sorry, Chloe... I'm so sorry."

Footsteps echoed from the doorway.

Victoria stepped out onto the terrace. She stepped carefully around the shattered glass, her expression unreadable as she looked down at her bruised son, his shivering wife, and the bleeding housekeeper.

"How melodramatic," Victoria said coldly, leaning on her cane. "You ruined a twelve-thousand-dollar door, Julian. And for what? She’s still a nobody. You still have no future without my backing."

Julian looked up from the floor. The fear, deference, and submissiveness he had shown his mother his entire life had vanished, burned away by the sight of his wife hanging over a abyss.

"Martha," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he lifted Chloe into his arms. "Can you walk?"

"I... I can crawl, Mr. Julian," Martha gasped through her teeth.

"You won't have to," Julian said. He looked at Victoria with eyes that were black with hate. "Because my mother is going to help you down to the car. Or I will throw her cane off this roof, followed by her corporate stock certificates."

May you like

Victoria’s jaw tightened. "You wouldn't dare."

Julian took one step toward her, his eyes wild, carrying his wife in his arms. "Try me, Victoria. I have nothing left to lose."
