Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Crown

The lead detective from the LAPD, Detective Miller, stepped onto the stage, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Victoria Vance," Detective Miller said, his voice cold and professional. "You are under arrest for attempted murder, corporate fraud, grand larceny, and filing a false police report."

Arthur Pendelton tried to step between the officer and Victoria. "Now see here, Detective, my client has executive immunity under—"

"Arthur Pendelton," Detective Miller interrupted, pulling a second set of warrants from his jacket. "You are also under arrest as a co-conspirator in the embezzlement of the Vance Pension Trust."

Pendelton turned pale, dropping his leather briefcase onto the stage floor as a second detective grabbed his arms.

Victoria looked around the grand ballroom. The people who had bowed to her, kissed her ring, and begged for her investment advice thirty minutes ago were now pulling out their phones, taking photos, and shouting questions.

"You can't do this to me!" Victoria screamed as the cuffs clicked around her wrists. "I am Victoria Vance! I built this city!"

As the police led her down the stage steps, she passed directly in front of Chloe.

Victoria stopped, her silver hair messy, her eyes burning with a desperate, wild fury. "You ruined me," she hissed at Chloe. "You penniless little parasite... you destroyed everything my husband built!"

Chloe looked at the woman who had tried to murder her and her unborn child seventy stories in the air. She didn't feel rage. She didn't feel triumph. She only felt a profound, quiet pity.

"You destroyed yourself, Victoria," Chloe said softly. "The moment you decided that money was worth more than human life."

The detectives dragged Victoria down the aisle, past the flashing lights of news cameras that had already arrived at the hotel lobby.

Outside the hotel, news vans were parked three deep, satellite dishes raised as reporters broadcast the stunning downfall of California's most powerful real estate matriarch live across the nation.

Julian stood on the hotel steps, holding Chloe’s hand, breathing the cool autumn air. For the first time in his life, his shoulders felt light. The crushing weight of the Vance name, the endless demands for perfection, the cold calculation—it was all gone, swept away by the truth.

Martha walked up beside them, pulling a warm wool shawl around her shoulders. "Well," the old woman said with a soft smile. "That was certainly more dramatic than cleaning the chandeliers."

Julian laughed—a deep, genuine laugh that came straight from his chest. "Let's go home, Martha."

"Where is home, Mr. Julian?"

Julian looked at Chloe, whose hand was resting gently on her swollen belly. "Wherever we build it."
