Chapter 8 - The Unraveling

A collective gasp swept through the four hundred investors in the ballroom.

On the screen, Victoria Vance was clearly visible in her navy suit, raising her heavy brass-tipped cane high above her head and smashing it repeatedly into the structural glass floor beneath a terrified, pregnant Chloe.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Victoria shrieked, turning around to face the screen, her composure completely shattering. "Turn that off! Turn it off now!"

Arthur Pendelton scrambled toward the AV control booth near the back of the hall, but the heavy double doors of the control booth had been chain-locked from the inside. Inside the booth, Marcus Vance sat calmly at the master control console, typing commands into the system while a security lock code ran on a loop.

The audio from the rooftop video boomed through the ballroom’s subwoofers:

"You really thought you could trap my son with this brat, didn't you, Chloe? A penniless girl from the suburbs... I am erasing this mistake tonight!"

Women in the front row covered their mouths in horror. Hedge fund managers stood up from their chairs, pointing at the stage.

"Shut it down! Cut the power!" Victoria screamed into her microphone, her face red, her veins bulging against her neck.

Before her security guards could reach the main power breakers, the video feed split into two windows.

On the left side, the rooftop video played the terrifying moment where Chloe hung over the seventy-story drop, saved only by Martha’s scarf.

On the right side, a high-speed scroll of forensic accounting documents appeared—bank statements, offshore account registries in the Cayman Islands, and forged land deeds bearing Victoria Vance’s signature.

A clean, authoritative voice boomed over the public address system:

"For six years, Victoria Vance has used Vance Enterprises as a personal slush fund, stealing over forty million dollars from the employee pension trust to cover her private gambling and bad offshore investments."

The double doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

Julian Vance walked down the center aisle, wearing a plain black suit, his hand held tightly in Chloe’s. Beside them walked Martha, holding her head high, and two uniformed officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Financial Crimes Division.

"Julian!" Victoria gasped, shrinking back against the lectern as four hundred pairs of eyes shifted between her and her son. "Julian... tell them it’s a lie! Tell them it’s a deepfake!"

Julian walked right up to the edge of the stage, looking up at his mother.

"It’s not a deepfake, Victoria," Julian said, his voice echoing through the silent ballroom without a microphone. "It’s your legacy."
