Chapter 6 - The Trap Closes

For the next forty-eight hours, the basement apartment in Pasadena became a command center.
Chloe worked sixteen hours a day, her fingers flying across Marcus’s laptop keyboard, reconstructing the complex web of offshore entities, forged land deeds, and missing pension funds into a clean, indisputable visual presentation.
Julian spent his time on untraceable burn phones, contacting former college friends who now worked as junior analysts at major Wall Street rating agencies.
By Thursday evening, the news broke across local television:
"Police are searching for sixty-two-year-old Martha Higgins, a long-time housekeeper for the wealthy Vance family, who is wanted for the theft of over three hundred thousand dollars in diamond jewelry. Authorities warn she may be traveling with Chloe Vance, who is reported to be suffering from a severe psychiatric emergency..."
Chloe slammed the laptop shut, her body trembling with rage. "She’s turning Martha into a criminal! Martha, who served her house for thirty years!"
Martha set down a bowl of soup she had been stirring, her face serene despite the yellowing bruises on her neck. "Let her talk, Miss Chloe. Lies are like dry leaves—they make a lot of noise when the wind blows, but they turn to mud the moment the rain hits."
Suddenly, the front door of the brownstone shook with three heavy knocks.
Julian immediately stood up, grabbing a heavy iron wrench from the utility closet. "Stay behind me," he whispered to Chloe.
"Julian, open up. It’s me," a voice called out through the door.
Julian unbolted the lock and pulled the door open an inch. Standing in the dim alley light was a man in his late fifties wearing a dark raincoat—David Chen, the head of building security for the Vance Enterprises tower.
"David?" Julian asked, lowering the wrench slightly. "How did you find us?"
"I've known Marcus for ten years, Julian," David said, stepping inside quickly and closing the door behind him. "And I know your mother. When she ordered me to clear the security footage from the rooftop terrace from eight o'clock Tuesday night, I didn't delete it. I made a copy."
David pulled a heavy metal hard drive from his coat pocket and set it on the kitchen table.
Julian stared at the drive. "You saved the footage?"
"My sister worked as a maid for your mother fifteen years ago," David said quietly. "Victoria fired her without a pension because she broke a crystal vase. I stayed at this company to protect the staff, not to help a sociopath murder a pregnant girl. The footage is clean, high-definition, and shows Mrs. Vance striking the structural glass with her cane while the door was electronically locked from the inside."
Chloe covered her mouth, tears of relief flooding her eyes. "David... thank you."

"Don't thank me yet," David warned. "Victoria has hired fifty off-duty police officers to secure the Regent Hotel ballroom tomorrow morning. Every guest has to present a bio-metric ID and an investor pass. She knows you're going to try something, Julian. She’s turned the ballroom into a fortress."
Marcus walked over, taking the hard drive from the table. "A fortress is only useful if the threat comes from the outside, David. But what if the threat is already standing on the stage?"
