Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary in the Shadows

Thirty minutes later, Julian’s dark gray sedan tore through the rain-slicked streets of downtown Los Angeles, bypassing the private medical centers owned by the Vance Corporation.

Julian knew his mother’s reach. If he took Chloe to Vance Memorial, Victoria’s legal team would have psychiatric holds placed on her before sunrise, framing her as an unstable woman who had suffered a delusional episode on the roof.

Instead, he pulled into the alleyway behind St. Jude’s Community Clinic—a small, independent facility in an old industrial neighborhood funded by non-profit grants.

"We need a doctor!" Julian shouted, carrying Chloe through the rear emergency entrance, Martha trailing limply behind them, holding her crushed side.

A young resident physician, Dr. Samuel Chen, rushed forward with two nurses, guiding Julian to a curtained triage bay.

"What happened to her?" Dr. Chen asked, immediately placing a fetal monitor stethoscope against Chloe’s abdomen.

"She... she fell," Julian panted, his hands covered in dried blood from his glass-cut palms. "She’s eight months pregnant. Please... check the baby."

For two terrifying minutes, the room was silent except for the rhythmic whoosh-whoosh of the monitoring equipment. Then, a steady, strong heartbeat filled the small triage room.

Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

Chloe let out a long, ragged breath, weeping into her hands. "He’s alive... Julian, he’s alive..."

Dr. Chen checked Chloe’s vitals and examined the deep scratches on her legs. "The baby is resilient, but your blood pressure is dangerously high, and you have mild hypothermia. You need absolute rest. And who is this?" he asked, looking at Martha, who was leaning against the wall, her face pale as chalk.

"She saved my life," Chloe whispered.

After examining Martha, Dr. Chen sighed grimly. "Three broken ribs and a severe lung contusion. She needs taping and heavy observation, but she’s tough. You people look like you survived a plane crash."

Julian sat on a stool beside Chloe’s bed, taking her hand in his. His suit was ruined, his hands bandaged, his hair wild.

"Julian," Chloe whispered, her eyes searching his face. "We can't go back. She’s going to use everything she has to destroy us."

"We aren't going back," Julian said, leaning in to kiss her forehead. "The Vance money, the penthouse, the trust fund—it’s poison. I’m done with all of it."

"It’s not just the money, Mr. Julian," Martha coughed softly from the adjacent bed. "Your mother isn't just cruel. She’s desperate. The reason she wanted Miss Chloe gone tonight... it wasn't just about class. It was about the audit."

Julian turned, frowning. "The audit?"

"Miss Chloe spent three weeks in the family archives last month," Martha said, her voice dropping into a conspiratorial whisper. "She’s an accountant. She noticed something in the 1998 land transfer deeds for the Sterling Tower project."

Chloe’s eyes widened as the memory flashed through her mind. "The offshore trusts... Victoria didn't just inherit the company when your father died, Julian. She forged his final codicil and siphoned forty percent of the development capital into private accounts in the Channel Islands. She’s been broke for six years. Vance Enterprises is a hollow shell held together by fraudulent loans!"

Julian stared at his wife, the final piece of the puzzle falling into place. "That’s why she wanted you gone before the board meeting on Friday. If you presented those findings to the auditors..."

"I wouldn't just be a penniless girl she disliked," Chloe said quietly. "I would be the person who put her in federal prison."
