Chapter 5 - The War Room

The basement apartment of a small brownstone in Pasadena smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and damp wool.

It belonged to Marcus Vance—Julian’s estranged older brother. Marcus had been disowned by Victoria twelve years ago when he refused to join the family firm, choosing instead to work as a public defender for low-income tenants in East LA.

Marcus sat at a wooden kitchen table covered in legal pads, laptop chargers, and financial ledgers, staring at his younger brother.

"You look like hell, Julian," Marcus said, setting down two mugs of instant coffee.

"I know," Julian said, resting his bruised head in his hands.

Across the room, Chloe was resting on a small sofa, wrapped in a blanket, while Martha sat in a recliner, her torso tightly wrapped in medical bandages.

"I need your help, Marcus," Julian said, looking up. "Not for me. For them. Victoria tried to kill Chloe last night."

Marcus didn't look surprised. He took a slow sip of coffee and leaned back. "I told you twelve years ago, Julian. Mother isn't a human being; she’s an algorithm made of money and pride. You didn't believe me when I left."

"I was eighteen and stupid!" Julian snapped, his voice tight. "I thought you were being dramatic! But I saw her face last night, Marcus. She locked the door and watched the glass fall beneath Chloe. She didn't even blink."

Chloe sat up slowly on the sofa, clutching her blanket. "Marcus, we don't just need protection. We need to expose her. I have the forensic audit notes from the 1998 transfer."

She pulled a folded stack of papers from her canvas tote bag—notes she had smuggled out of the Vance estate before the roof incident.

Marcus took the papers, flipping through the columns of numbers with a practiced eye. As he read, his expression shifted from casual cynicism to intense focus.

"This isn't just tax fraud," Marcus muttered, his eyebrows knitting together. "She’s been using the Vance Employee Pension Trust as collateral for her offshore loans. If these real estate market numbers drop another two percent this quarter, the pension fund goes bust. Three hundred retired construction workers and building staff lose everything."

"Can we take this to the SEC?" Chloe asked.

"The SEC moves like a glacier," Marcus replied, shaking his head. "By the time they issue a subpoena, Victoria will have filed for corporate restructuring, transferred the remaining assets to her private shell companies in Panama, and left Julian holding the bag as the signed executive officer."

"Then what do we do?" Julian asked desperately.

Marcus looked from his brother to Chloe, a cold, dangerous smile spreading across his face. "We don't go to the government, Julian. We go to the shareholders. The annual Vance Enterprises investor summit is in three days at the Regent Hotel."

"She’ll have security at every door," Julian said. "She’s already put out an arrest warrant for Martha claiming she stole jewelry."

"Let her bring her security," Marcus said, pulling a sleek black thumb drive from his pocket. "Because we aren't going to crash the meeting with guns or lawyers. We're going to crash it with the truth."
