Chapter 4 - The Chessboard Moves

Thursday passed in a blur of coded communications, quiet meetings with loyal regional managers, and tactical legal maneuvering.

Claire did not return to the Barrington estate. She stayed in the secure apartment above the South Boston warehouse, sleeping fitfully with her hand resting protectively over her stomach, fueled by a potent mix of maternal instinct and ice-cold resolve.

Meanwhile, Vincent Moretti was moving his final pieces across the board.

By Thursday evening, he had secured verbal commitments from two-thirds of the regional board members. The media was already running puff pieces in the Boston Herald praising his visionary leadership in securing the waterfront and expanding the shipping corridors.

Elena Ward was everywhere—coordinating press releases, reviewing guest lists for the post-merger gala, and ensuring that every detail of Friday’s meeting was choreographed to perfection.

At 9:00 p.m., Vincent sat in his home study, nursing a glass of bourbon while reviewing the final proxy voting tallies on his tablet.

His phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.

An unknown caller ID.

Vincent frowned, tapping the screen to answer. "This is Vincent Moretti."

“Good evening, Mr. Moretti,” a synthesized, modulated voice spoke through the speaker. “I am calling on behalf of an interested party regarding your upcoming merger on Friday morning.”

Vincent’s posture stiffened immediately. "Who is this? How did you get this number?"

“That’s irrelevant,” the voice continued, completely unbothered by his tone. “What is relevant is that your current financial disclosures fail to account for a forty-million-dollar discrepancy originating from the South Boston shipping trusts. If those numbers go before the federal compliance auditors tomorrow morning, your entire corporate structure will collapse before the ink on the merger dries.”

A cold sweat broke out across Vincent’s neck. He stood up from his desk, his voice dropping into a dangerous growl. "If this is some kind of extortion attempt, you picked the wrong man. Name your price or get off the line."

“This isn't about money, Mr. Moretti,” the voice replied softly. “Some things cannot be bought back. Sleep well tonight. Tomorrow at ten o'clock, you’ll find out exactly what you lost.”

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Vincent stared at his phone, his heart hammering against his ribs. He immediately dialed his head of security. "Sweep every communication line into this house! Find out who routed that call!"

But even as he shouted orders into the phone, a cold, heavy dread settled in his chest. For the first time in ten years, Vincent Moretti realized he was no longer the one controlling the game.
