Chapter 5 - Friday Morning – The Thirty-Fifth Floor

The executive boardroom on the thirty-fifth floor of Moretti-Bennett Logistics was designed to impress anyone who walked through its doors.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of Boston Harbor under a brilliant, crisp Friday morning sun. A massive mahogany conference table stretched down the center of the room, surrounded by twenty high-backed leather chairs.

By 9:45 a.m., the room was packed.

Regional directors, senior investors, city officials, and two federal compliance auditors sat quietly around the table, murmuring amongst themselves about the historic nature of the merger.

At the head of the table sat Vincent Moretti.

He wore a custom-tailored charcoal suit, his expression a mask of absolute, unshakeable confidence. Despite the unsettling phone call the night before, his security team had found no trace of a digital breach, and his financial advisors assured him all accounts were fully locked down.

Standing immediately to his right was Elena Ward, wearing a striking cream-colored designer suit with the gold Moretti crest pinned proudly to her lapel. She looked radiant, radiating the triumphant energy of a woman who had finally reached the summit of power.

At 9:55 a.m., the heavy double doors at the end of the boardroom clicked open.

Vincent didn't bother looking up immediately, assuming it was just another regional director.

Then the room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.

Forks clinked against coffee cups outside in the catering lounge, but inside the boardroom, you could have heard a pin drop.

Vincent raised his eyes.

Walking through the double doors was Claire Bennett.

She wore a sharp, midnight-blue Armani pantsuit that commanded the room before she even spoke. Her dark hair was styled in sleek, modern waves, and her expression was completely devoid of the gentle warmth Vincent had taken for granted for seven years.

Behind her walked Marcus Vance, carrying a heavy aluminum briefcase, followed by two armed federal marshals in plain suits.

A collective gasp rippled through the board members.

Vincent slowly stood up from his chair, his brow furrowing in deep, dark confusion. "Claire? What the hell are you doing here? This is a closed corporate executive session. You aren't even on the active board roster anymore."

Claire stopped five feet from the head of the table. She didn't flinch, she didn't waver, and she didn't look at Elena. Her pale gray eyes locked directly onto Vincent’s.

"Is it, Vincent?" Claire asked, her voice calm, clear, and carrying effortlessly across the silent boardroom. "Because according to the primary trust charter established by my grandfather—which controls fifty-eight percent of the voting shares in this enterprise—I am not just on the board. I am the majority controlling beneficiary."

Elena stepped forward, her professional smile slipping just an inch. "Claire, let’s not make a scene. Your voting rights were restructured under the proxy agreement signed three months ago. Security—please escort Mrs. Moretti out of the building."

None of the security guards near the doors moved an inch. They recognized Marcus Vance, and more importantly, they recognized the federal marshals standing behind him.

Claire let out a cold, humorless laugh.

"Proxy agreement, Elena?" Claire stepped closer, pulling a single document from her briefcase and placing it gently on the mahogany table. "You mean the document where my signature was fraudulently forged while I was managing foundation assets?"

Vincent’s face drained of color. He slammed his hands onto the table, leaning forward. "That’s an absurd accusation! The proxy filing was processed legally and approved by corporate legal counsel!"

"Corporate legal counsel that you handpicked and bribed with siphoned funds," Marcus Vance chimed in smoothly, opening his aluminum briefcase and pulling out thick stacks of forensic accounting reports. He distributed them to the federal auditors sitting near the center of the table. "Gentlemen, if you turn to page fourteen of the audit report, you’ll find forty million dollars in unauthorized wire transfers routed through offshore dummy corporations—all originating from shipping subsidiaries legally owned by the Bennett family trust."

The room erupted into chaotic shouting. Investors stood up from their chairs, demanding explanations. The federal auditors immediately opened their laptops, cross-referencing the account numbers against federal banking databases.

Elena turned to Vincent, her face pale with sudden panic. "Vincent... what is this? What are they talking about?"

Vincent didn't answer her. He was staring at Claire as if he were seeing a ghost step out of the shadows. The cold, calculating realization hit him like a physical blow: he hadn't sidelined his wife. He had walked directly into a trap she had meticulously constructed while he was busy celebrating his own reflection.
