Chapter 8 - The Quiet Aftermath

Six months later.

The bitter winter snows of New England had melted away, replaced by the vibrant, blooming greens of a Boston spring.

The sprawling Barrington estate was peaceful, bathed in the golden afternoon light of late May. The sprawling gardens were filled with blossoming tulips and daffodils—flowers Claire’s grandmother had planted decades ago.

Inside the grand nursery on the second floor, sunlight poured through large bay windows, illuminating a room painted in soft, calming shades of cream and sage green.

Claire stood by the wooden crib, gently adjusting a soft white blanket.

A quiet knock echoed at the open nursery door.

She turned her head.

Daniel Pierce stood in the doorway. He wore a simple tweed jacket instead of his usual chauffeur uniform, holding a small, secured package in his hand.

"Mail delivery for the director," Daniel said with a faint, respectful smile.

Claire walked over, taking the package from his hands. "Thank you, Daniel. Though I told you, you don't need to hand-deliver domestic mail anymore."

"Habit," Daniel replied easily. He glanced into the crib, where a tiny baby boy with dark hair and remarkably calm gray eyes was sleeping peacefully. "How’s young Master Bennett-Moretti holding up?"

"He sleeps through everything," Claire smiled, gently brushing a finger against the baby's tiny hand. "Just like his mother when she has work to finish."

Daniel chuckled softly, turning to leave. "I'll be downstairs if you need anything, Claire."

"Daniel," she called out softly.

He paused, looking back.

"Thank you," she said, her voice rich with genuine gratitude. "For staying by my side when everything fell apart. You weren't just an employee; you were family."

Daniel gave a subtle, respectful nod. "Your grandmother taught me well, Mrs. Moretti. Some dynasties are worth protecting."
