Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

"Silence!"

The senior federal compliance auditor, a stern man named Thomas Sterling, slammed his hand onto the mahogany table. The room instantly quieted down, every eye turning toward him.

Auditor Sterling adjusted his glasses, scanning the forensic audit report before looking up directly at Vincent Moretti.

"Mr. Moretti," Sterling said, his voice ringing with formal authority. "These documents indicate systematic wire fraud, forgery of trust instruments, and unauthorized asset diversion exceeding forty million dollars. Furthermore, the primary voting shares controlling this corporation legally belong to Mrs. Claire Bennett-Moretti under irrevocable family trust provisions."

Vincent clenched his jaw, his eyes blazing with fury. "This is a hostile coup! She’s fabricating documents to derail a multi-million-dollar merger out of personal spite!"

"Is it spite, Vincent?" Claire asked softly, stepping right up to the edge of the table and looking him dead in the eye.

She reached into her blazer pocket, pulled out a small, sealed medical envelope, and slid it across the mahogany wood until it came to a rest directly in front of his coffee cup.

Vincent looked down at it, frowning. "What is this?"

"Open it," Claire instructed quietly.

With shaking fingers, Vincent tore open the envelope and pulled out the contents.

A single ultrasound photograph.

Clear, undeniable, and stamped with the date and medical provider’s seal from Monday morning.

Eight weeks.

Vincent froze. The air seemed to vanish from his lungs. He stared at the gray, blurred image on the film, then slowly raised his gaze to meet Claire’s unyielding eyes.

"You..." Vincent whispered, the word catching in his throat. "You were...?"

"I went to the clinic on Monday morning to surprise you," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of quiet, devastating scorn. "I wanted to tell you that you were going to be a father. I drove straight from that clinic to Harbor Point. And instead of a husband, I found a man publicly pledging his loyalty to another woman while systematically stealing everything my family built."

The boardroom was so quiet you could hear the distant hum of traffic thirty-five stories below.

Elena Ward stared at the ultrasound photo in Vincent’s hand, her face turning chalk white. The gold Moretti crest pinned to her lapel suddenly looked less like a badge of triumph and more like a scarlet letter of public humiliation.

"Take him into custody," Auditor Sterling instructed the federal marshals.

The two plain-clothes marshals stepped forward, placing heavy hands on Vincent Moretti’s shoulders.

Vincent didn't fight them. He didn't yell, he didn't threaten, and he didn't try to pull away. He simply stood there, utterly hollowed out, staring at the woman he had underestimated, betrayed, and ultimately lost forever.

As they hauled him backward toward the double doors, Vincent looked back one last time.

"Claire..." he choked out, his voice cracking. "Please..."

Claire did not blink. She did not flinch. She simply turned her back on him, walking over to the head of the mahogany table, pulling out the central executive chair, and sitting down.

The crown had finally returned to its rightful owner.
