Chapter 10 - The Promise on Lake Michigan

One year later.

The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in deep shades of gold, crimson, and violet. A private yacht named The Lucia moved smoothly across the calm waters, its sharp bow cutting through the silver waves.

On the upper deck, Natalie stood by the wooden railing, watching the Chicago skyline glow against the twilight. Beside her, eighteen-month-old Leo was toddling happily across the carpeted floor, holding Frank’s hand as he pointed at a passing lighthouse.

Dominick Vance stepped onto the deck, joining Natalie at the railing.

"The board approved the new foundation budget today," Dominick said, leaning against the teak wood. "Fifty million dollars dedicated to funding emergency medical care for low-income mothers and providing legal protection for victims of domestic financial abuse."

Natalie smiled, taking a breath of the cool lake air. "That's the best investment we’ve made all year, Dominick."

"Michael’s final appeal was rejected by the appellate court this morning," Dominick added quietly. "He will serve his full ten-year sentence at the Pekin Federal Facility. His attorney asked if you would be willing to send a photograph of Leo once a year."

Natalie looked out over the endless expanse of the lake.

There was no anger left in her heart—only the calm, vast quiet that comes after a great storm has passed.

"Tell his attorney no," Natalie said, her voice steady and clear. "Michael had his chance to be a father the night Leo was born. He chose his ambition over his son. Leo will know his family’s history, but he will never grow up under the shadow of a man who treated love like a transaction."

She turned around and walked toward her son. Leo saw her and let go of Frank’s hand, babbling happily as he stumbled into her arms. Natalie lifted him high into the air, his joyful laughter filling the quiet evening sky.

Frank walked over, handing Natalie her coat as the lake breeze grew cooler. "Where to next, Boss?"

Natalie wrapped her coat around herself and held Leo close against her heart, looking out at the glittering lights of the city she now helped run.

"Home, Frank," she said, her face illuminated by the golden rays of the setting sun. "Take us home."

The yacht turned toward the harbor, carrying the mother and her son into a future where no one would ever treat them as a cheap toy again—a future built on a foundation as strong and timeless as the lake itself.
