Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Sand

The boardroom erupted into chaos.
Three major board members immediately stood up, demanding an emergency briefing from the legal team. Shareholders began frantically dialing their brokers as news of the federal freeze on Terminal 4 reached the financial wire. Within twenty minutes, the trading price of DeLuca Atlantic stock plummeted twenty-four percent.
Vanessa grabbed Michael’s arm, her voice rising in panic. "Michael! Do something! Tell them she's lying! Call the city mayor!"
Michael didn't move. He stood frozen, staring at Natalie as she calmly signed a series of injunction documents presented by Dominick Vance.
"Mr. DeLuca," the Federal Marshal said, stepping toward Michael. "You are hereby ordered to vacate the premises of Terminal 4 by midnight tonight. All heavy equipment and shipping operations must cease until a formal hearing before Judge Kane on Friday."
"Natalie," Michael choked out, stepping around the table toward her wheelchair. "Natalie, please... we can talk about this. We're married. We have a son!"
Frank immediately stepped in front of Michael, his wide chest blocking him. "Back up, Mr. DeLuca. You lost the right to talk to her the moment you left her bleeding in the street."
"I didn't know she was in labor!" Michael shouted, his composure completely shattering. "I didn't know!"
"You didn't care," Natalie said without looking back as Frank began wheeling her toward the elevator. "You cared about Vanessa. You cared about your thirty-million-dollar expansion. You cared about looking powerful. Enjoy your champagne, Michael. It’s the last expensive thing you’ll ever drink."
The elevator doors slid shut, cutting off Michael’s frantic shouts.
By noon, the news had shattered Chicago’s business district. Headlines ran across national financial news: DELUCA ATLANTIC SHIPWRECKED: CEO’S ESTRANGED WIFE REVEALED AS SOLE HEIR TO BELLINI PORT EMPIRE.
In his private office, Michael sat alone in the dark. The plush velvet furniture, the marble desk, the awards hanging on the wall—everything felt like ash.
Vanessa walked in without knocking, carrying a designer suitcase.
Michael looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Where are you going?"
Vanessa looked at him with an icy indifference that mirrored the exact tone she had used against Natalie at the gala. "My attorney advised me to sever all formal ties with DeLuca Atlantic before the federal fraud indictment lands. The board is filing a corporate lawsuit against you for misrepresenting property ownership to investors."
Michael stared at her, a bitter, hollow laugh escaping his throat. "You're leaving? After everything I gave you?"
May you like
"You didn't give me anything, Michael," Vanessa said, adjusting her sunglasses. "You gave me access to a company that belonged to your wife. You were just the custodian."
She turned and walked out, her high heels clicking sharply against the marble floor until the sound faded into complete silence.
