Chapter 7 - The Custody Siege

On Friday morning, the Federal Family Court of Cook County was packed with media, legal teams, and armed federal officers.
Michael DeLuca sat at the defendant’s table, looking gaunt and hollow. His hundred-thousand-dollar suit hung loosely on his shoulders. Beside him sat a high-priced criminal defense attorney named Marcus Thorne, whom Michael had hired using his last remaining personal lines of credit.
Natalie sat across the aisle, dressed in a tailored ivory suit, flanked by Dominick Vance and Frank.
Judge Katherine Mercer struck her gavel, her gaze piercing through the tense courtroom.
"We are here to resolve two emergency petitions," Judge Mercer announced. "First, the motion by Mr. Michael DeLuca for emergency joint custody and visitation rights regarding the minor child, Leo DeLuca. Second, the petition by Lucia Bellini—formerly known as Natalie DeLuca—for full legal and physical custody, alongside a permanent protective order."
Marcus Thorne stood up immediately. "Your Honor, my client is a respected business leader who was tragically separated from his wife during a high-stress corporate event. He was completely unaware that Mrs. DeLuca was in actual labor when she left the gala. Denying a father access to his newborn son based on marital disagreement is an unconscionable violation of civil rights."
Judge Mercer looked at Dominick. "Counselor Vance?"
Dominick stood up calmly, connecting a flash drive to the courtroom media system.
"Your Honor, we submit into evidence the complete, unedited audio recording from the security dispatch center of DeLuca Atlantic Logistics from the night of August 12th," Dominick said.
A wave of murmurs swept through the gallery. Michael froze.
Dominick pressed play.
Michael’s own voice echoed through the courtroom speakers, crisp, cold, and unambiguous: “I don't care if she claims she's having contractions. Take the Tahoe, cut her off before she reaches her attorney, and recover the laptop. If she causes a scene, tell security to hold her at the penthouse until the board meeting finishes tomorrow.”
Then came Frank’s voice: “Michael, she's bleeding. Her water just broke.”
And Michael’s final, dismissive reply: “Call me when you know something.”
The courtroom erupted into horrified gasps. Several journalists began furiously writing on their tablets.
Judge Mercer’s face turned into an impenetrable mask of disgust. She glared down at Michael, who bowed his head, unable to meet her eyes.
"Is there any dispute regarding the authenticity of this recording, Mr. Thorne?" Judge Mercer asked, her voice dangerously quiet.
Thorne swallowed hard, looking at Michael, then back at the judge. "Your Honor... my client was under severe financial stress..."
"Silence," Judge Mercer commanded.
She picked up her pen and signed the legal order with sharp, aggressive strokes.
"Mr. DeLuca," Judge Mercer said, looking down at Michael with absolute contempt. "Your actions on the night of August 12th constituted not merely extreme spousal neglect, but reckless endangerment of an unborn infant. This court hereby denies your petition for joint custody in its entirety."

She struck her gavel. "Lucia Bellini is granted sole, absolute legal and physical custody of Leo Bellini. Mr. DeLuca is granted zero visitation rights, pending a full psychological evaluation and the conclusion of ongoing federal grand jury investigations into corporate land fraud. Furthermore, a permanent five-hundred-foot protective order is issued immediately."
Michael slumped in his chair, his hands covering his face as a quiet, broken sob escaped his throat.
