Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the Past

While Michael’s corporate world collapsed, Natalie lived inside the quiet, delicate reality of the NICU.
Four days had passed since Leo’s birth. The tiny boy was now off the ventilator, breathing on his own, his tiny fingers wrapped around Natalie’s index finger as she sat beside his incubator.
Dominick Vance entered the private room quietly, carrying a cup of tea for Natalie and a secure tablet.
"How is our young lion today?" Dominick asked softly.
"He gained two ounces," Natalie smiled, her face filled with a gentle light that had been absent for years. "The doctors say he can come home in two weeks if his feeding metrics stay steady."
"He has the Bellini stubbornness," Dominick said, handing her the tea. "Michael filed an emergency petition for joint custody this morning."
Natalie’s smile faded, her grip on the tea mug tightening. "On what grounds?"
"He's claiming that as the biological father, he has equal rights to visit and make medical decisions. He’s also trying to argue that your emotional state makes you unfit to hold sole guardianship of the trust."
"He didn't even come to see Leo when he was born," Natalie said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, dark register. "He sent enforcers to take my laptop while I was in surgery."
"I know," Dominick said. "And we are going to use that against him in court. But there is a complication, Lucia."
Dominick opened the tablet, displaying an encrypted intelligence report from the Chicago Police Department.
"When Matteo Bellini was killed twenty-five years ago, it wasn't just an internal syndicate hit," Dominick explained. "Someone inside the city administration leaked the location of his safehouse. We always suspected a junior lieutenant named Anthony DeLuca—Michael’s late father."
Natalie turned her head sharply. "Michael’s father?"
"Anthony DeLuca started his small trucking firm three weeks after Matteo Bellini died," Dominick said, showing her a scanned land transaction from 1999. "He was given the initial lease to Terminal 4 for one dollar by a corrupt city commissioner who was later imprisoned. Michael didn't just inherit a logistics business from his father, Natalie. He inherited stolen property built on your father's blood."
Natalie looked down at her small, fragile son resting inside the incubator. The pieces of her life—the strange sense of isolation she had felt as a child, her mother’s constant fear of public places, Michael’s father insisting that Michael marry a 'quiet girl with no family'—all aligned into a single, terrifying picture.
"Michael’s father knew who I was," Natalie whispered, horror dawning in her eyes. "He arranged for Michael to meet me in nursing school."
"Old Anthony DeLuca thought that by marrying Michael to you, he could quietly neutralize the Bellini bloodline forever," Dominick said coldly. "They kept you quiet, kept you focused on being a housewife, and made sure you never looked into your mother's estate. But they made one mistake."

"What mistake?"
"They forgot that a lion's cub grows up."
