Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Six months later, the sun rose over a quiet, beautiful coastal town in Maine.
The Vale syndicate was gone. The headlines had dominated the news for weeks—the spectacular, self-inflicted collapse of one of Chicago’s oldest crime families, orchestrated by its own leader, Roman Vale. Senator Sterling was serving a federal sentence, and the remnants of Caleb’s rogue faction had been systematically dismantled by the authorities using Roman’s provided evidence.
Because Roman had fully cooperated with the federal government and turned over his entire criminal enterprise, his legal team had secured him a full immunity agreement, under the condition that he forfeit all illegally obtained assets and permanently retire from public life.
He had walked away with nothing but his freedom, his legitimate personal savings, and the clothes on his back.
And he had never been happier.
On the porch of a charming, white-shingled house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Eleanor Brooks sat in a rocking chair, a warm cup of tea in her hand. Her health had improved dramatically, her cheeks regaining a healthy, rosy color.
Emma walked out of the house, carrying a tray of fresh pastries. She wore a simple sundress, her hair tied back, the dark shadows that had once haunted her eyes completely gone.
“The air is so clean here,” Eleanor said with a smile, looking out at the glittering water. “I never thought I’d see the ocean, Emma.”
“You deserve to see every beautiful thing this world has to offer,” Emma said, kissing her cheek.
A quiet footstep sounded on the wooden porch.
Roman walked up the steps, carrying a bundle of fresh firewood. He wore a simple flannel shirt and jeans—a stark contrast to the immaculate charcoal suits of his past life. He looked relaxed, the heavy, constant tension in his shoulders completely dissolved.
He set the wood down, walking over to Emma. He slid his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his chest. Emma leaned into him, her hands resting over his.
“The local boat yard offered me a job managing their shipping logistics,” Roman murmured near her ear, his voice warm and light. “Legitimate work. Honest pay.”
Emma turned in his arms, looking up into the eyes of the man who had destroyed his own empire just to keep her safe.
“A logistics manager?” she teased softly. “Are you sure you can handle such a small operation, Mr. Vale?”
“As long as I get to come home to you every night,” Roman said, his gaze deeply sincere. “I can handle anything.”

He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a tender, lingering kiss that tasted of sea salt, fresh beginnings, and a future they had fought so hard to win.
Beside them, Eleanor smiled, watching the waves roll in, knowing that the chains of the past had finally been broken for good.
