Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Vale Empire

Caleb backed up against the control panel, his flashlight trembling. He pulled a small, silver pistol from his pocket, his face slick with sweat. “You think you’ve won? If you kill me, the evidence I gave to the DA goes public. Your entire empire is seized. You’ll be a wanted man with nothing!”

“I don't care about the empire,” Roman said, stepping into the light of Caleb’s flashlight. He looked calm, almost relieved. “I have already sent the decrypted files, including your financial logs and Senator Sterling’s bribes, to the Federal Prosecutor’s office in Washington. I bypassed the local courts entirely.”

Caleb’s eyes widened in horror. “You... you ruined us. You ruined the family! Everything our grandfather built!”

“Our grandfather built a empire on the blood of the innocent,” Roman said, his voice quiet and steady. “It ends tonight.”

Caleb screamed, raising his gun to shoot Roman.

A single shot rang out through the warehouse.

Caleb froze, the gun slipping from his fingers as he collapsed to the floor. Behind him stood Emma, holding a discarded pistol she had picked up from the floor, her hands trembling but her gaze unwavering.

Roman looked at Caleb’s fallen form, then walked over to Emma. He gently took the gun from her hands, tossing it aside, and pulled her into his arms. She buried her face in his chest, her body shaking as the adrenaline finally washed out of her.

“It’s over,” Roman whispered into her hair, holding her tight. “It’s finally over.”

Outside, the distant wail of sirens began to echo through the rain.
