Chapter 6 - The Trap is Set

By the next afternoon, Roman’s legal team had discovered the leverage Caleb was using. Senator Sterling had signed off on a warrant that would allow a specialized tactical unit—secretly paid off by Caleb—to raid Roman’s estate under the pretense of seizing illegal weapons.

“They aren't coming to arrest you, Roman,” Grant explained, pointing to a blueprint of the estate. “They’re coming to clean house. Caleb’s mercenaries will be dressed as federal agents. Once they enter, they’ll shoot to kill, claim you resisted, and eliminate Emma and the evidence in the confusion.”

“We won’t be here,” Roman said calmly.

“Where are we going?” Emma asked.

“To the place where it all began,” Roman replied. “The old shipping docks on the south canal. It’s the heart of my family’s empire. Caleb thinks he has taken it over, but he forgets that I built the security systems there myself.”

Roman turned to Grant. “Prepare the medical transport for Eleanor. Move her to our safehouse in Wisconsin. Emma comes with me.”

“Roman, it’s too dangerous for her,” Grant protested.

“She’s only safe if she’s with me,” Roman said firmly. “Caleb knows my blind spots, but he doesn't know her. She is our wildcard.”

As they prepared to leave, Roman handed Emma a small, sleek silver device. “This is a master override key for the dock’s automated security grids. If Caleb corners us, this key can shut down the power to the entire harbor sector, locking every electronic door and gate. It runs on an independent satellite signal.”

Emma took the key, her fingers brushing his. “How do I use it?”

“You press the central button,” Roman said. “But only when I tell you. If you do it too early, we get trapped inside. If you do it too late, we get overrun.”

“I trust you,” she said simply.

Roman’s eyes softened, a rare, genuine warmth breaking through his stoic mask. “Then we cannot lose.”
