Chapter 7 - Ash and Iron

The storm broke over Chicago just as they reached the south canal shipping docks. Huge cranes stood like silent metal giants against the dark, churning sky. Rain lashed against the windshield of Roman’s SUV.
They slipped into the main control warehouse through a side entrance, Roman’s elite guards taking up defensive positions along the catwalks.
But Caleb was already waiting.
The lights in the warehouse suddenly flared violently, blinding them for a second. From the high metal scaffolding, dozen of armed mercenaries emerged, their weapons pointed down at Roman and his small team.
Caleb Vale stepped out of the elevated control room, a triumphant sneer plastered across his face. Beside him stood Senator Sterling, looking nervous but resolute.
“Welcome home, Roman,” Caleb called out, his voice echoing off the corrugated steel walls. “I must admit, I didn’t think you’d be foolish enough to come here. But then, you’ve always had a soft spot for the family legacy.”
Roman did not raise his weapon. He kept Emma slightly behind him, his body acting as a shield. “The legacy is dead, Caleb. You killed it the moment you put a chain around an innocent woman’s ankle.”
Caleb laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “An innocent woman? She’s a cockroach who stuck her nose where it didn’t belong! And now, she’s going to die with you. Give me the backup card, Roman, and I might let the old lady in Wisconsin live.”
Roman’s eyes flared with a lethal, icy rage. He looked up at Caleb. “You didn't find the safehouse.”
“Not yet,” Caleb mocked. “But once you’re out of the picture, Sterling here will authorize a state-wide search. There is nowhere to hide.”
Under the cover of Roman’s massive frame, Emma’s fingers tightened around the silver override key in her pocket. She looked at the high-voltage electrical box situated near the central crane controls just twenty feet away. If she could reach it, she could disable the backup generators, rendering the mercenaries' electronic communications and night-vision gear useless in the dark.

She looked at Roman. He gave her a fraction of a nod—the signal.
“Grant! Now!” Roman roared.
