Chapter 3 - Safe Haven and Hidden Scars

By afternoon, Eleanor was safely settled in a secure, state-of-the-art medical suite on the top floor of Roman’s estate. When Emma was wheeled into the room, the reunion was tearful. The two women clung to each other, whispering words of comfort that had been denied to them for two agonizing weeks.

Roman stood by the doorway, watching them. For a man who had spent his entire life surrounded by betrayal, blood, and transactions, the sight of genuine, unconditional love was foreign—and deeply moving.

Later that evening, Emma sat on the terrace of her guest room, watching the dark waves of Lake Michigan crash against the stone barrier. The cool breeze helped clear the lingering fog of her captivity.

A quiet footstep sounded behind her. She didn’t flinch. She knew his stride by now.

“She’s sleeping,” Roman said, leaning against the stone balustrade a few feet away. “The doctors say her vitals are stabilizing. We have set up a permanent dialysis unit here. She will want for nothing.”

“Why are you doing this, Roman?” Emma asked, looking up at him. “You’re a mafia boss. You don't do charity work. What do you want from me?”

“I wanted the recording to secure my position,” Roman said honestly. “But now... it is different.”

“How is it different?”

Roman looked out over the water. “My father taught me that power is the only shield in this world. I built this empire to ensure no one could ever lock me in a room, or tell me when to breathe. But looking at you in that basement... I realized that my empire didn't stop my own blood from becoming a monster. Caleb used my resources, my names, my money to torture an innocent woman. If my empire protects monsters, then perhaps it doesn't deserve to stand.”

Emma was stunned. The feared Roman Vale was speaking of tearing down his own legacy.

“I retrieved the microSD card from the clinic,” Roman continued, pulling a small plastic case from his pocket. “My tech team is decrypting it now. Once we have the full file, Caleb’s operations will be exposed. But it also contains transactions that link my legitimate businesses to the syndicate's black funds. If this goes public, I go down with him.”

“Then don’t use it,” Emma said softly.

“I have to,” Roman replied, his eyes meeting hers with fierce intensity. “It’s the only way to guarantee your safety. As long as Caleb has a shadow of power, he will hunt you. I would burn Chicago to the ground before I let him touch you again.”

A strange, warm sensation bloomed in Emma’s chest. For the first time in thirteen days, she felt truly safe.
