Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

The pressure on Roman’s estate grew by the hour. Federal agents had established a perimeter at the gates, waiting for an arrest warrant to be signed by a judge sympathetic to Senator Sterling. Roman’s assets were frozen, and his legitimate businesses were being raided under the guise of an emergency investigation.

Despite the chaos, the interior of the estate remained remarkably calm. Roman refused to let the panic reach Emma and Eleanor.

Late that night, Emma couldn't sleep. She walked down to the dimly lit library, hoping to find a book to distract her mind. Instead, she found Roman sitting on the leather sofa, a glass of amber liquid sitting untouched on the table before him. He looked tired—not physically, but with the bone-deep weariness of a man who had been fighting a war since childhood.

She sat down beside him, keeping a respectful distance. “You should sleep.”

“I don't sleep well when the house is surrounded,” he said softly.

“I’m sorry,” Emma said, her voice barely a whisper. “If I hadn't taken that video...”

“If you hadn't taken that video, I would be dead, murdered by a cousin I trusted,” Roman countered, turning to face her. “And you would still be working yourself to the bone, unprotected. Do not apologize for surviving, Emma. It is the most beautiful thing about you.”

Emma felt her breath hitch. The intimacy of his words hung in the quiet room.

“I spent my whole life being invisible,” Emma said, looking down at her hands. “In foster care, you learn that the less space you take up, the safer you are. But when Caleb locked me in that basement, I realized that being invisible didn't save me. It just made it easier for them to forget I was there.”

Roman reached out, his large, warm hand gently covering hers. “I will never forget you are here. No matter what happens tomorrow, you are under my protection. And so is Eleanor.”

Emma looked up, her green eyes meeting his dark ones. In that quiet library, surrounded by the ruins of his empire, a silent promise was forged between them—one that had nothing to do with contracts or crime, and everything to do with the quiet, unbreakable bond of two souls who had finally found a safe harbor.
