Chapter 17 - The Ledger’s Downfall

When the morning sun rose over the Indiana hills, the rain had stopped, leaving behind a crisp sky wiped clean of clouds.

Federal agents and state police cars lined the driveway, their red and blue lights flashing against the green vines. Julian Thorne and Vance were led away in heavy steel handcuffs, facing federal charges of treason, attempted murder, illegal drug synthesis, and racketeering.

Inside the clinic office, Agent Miller sat with Clara and Alessio, reviewing the master hard drive recovered from Thorne’s boatyard.

"This drive contains the complete financial records of The Iron Ledger," Agent Miller said, looking at Clara with deep respect. "It documents thirty years of extortion against hospitals, clinics, and families across five states. Because of your evidence, we are freezing over two hundred million dollars in illegal assets."

"What about the claim against Leo's trust?" Alessio asked.

Agent Miller smiled, handing Alessio an official federal court order stamped by a United States District Judge. "The court has formally declared Don Vito’s collateral agreement fraudulent and void. Leopold Romano’s trust is completely cleared. Furthermore, the court has ruled that all clinical patents held by your community facility are permanently protected under non-profit status."

Clara leaned her head against Alessio’s shoulder, feeling the deep, rhythmic rise and fall of his chest. The ghost of Cicero had finally been laid to rest.
