Chapter 22 - Shadow Over the Ridge

The morning after the wedding broke over the valley not with golden light, but with a low, choking blanket of river fog. By 6:00 AM, the festive yellow linen had been packed away, replaced by the grim realities of an active defense.

Clara stood in the central pavilion of the clinic, staring at three separate patient charts spread across the stainless-steel counter. Outside, the steady hum of irrigation pumps suddenly sputtered and died, replaced by a harsh metallic grinding sound.

Bruno bounded into the clinic doorway, wiping grease and dark silt from his forearms. "It’s the main line from the ridge reservoir, Clara. Someone dumped industrial solvent directly into the primary valve upstream. It choked the filters and killed the pressure."

"Chemical contamination?" Clara asked instantly, her medical instincts overriding her exhaustion.

"Worst kind. High concentration of caustic lye," Bruno growled. "If we hadn't caught it, it would have wiped out forty acres of rootstock by noon and seeped into the well water."

Clara grabbed her emergency field kit. "The well water feeds the residential quarters on the south slope. Bruno, check the storage tanks immediately. I need to run a chemical analysis."

Before Bruno could move, a frantic knock battered the clinic’s heavy oak doors. Sister Mary, a retired nurse who had joined Clara’s rural medical team, rushed in supporting a trembling vineyard hand. The man was gasping, his skin flushed red, eyes streaming with tears.

"Clara! He was checking the secondary valves near the boundary line," Sister Mary gasped. "He inhaled something."

Clara took the man by the shoulders, guiding him onto an examination table. "Respiratory distress from volatile fumes. Bruno, grab the oxygen cylinder and 0.9% saline solution! Fast!"

As Clara worked with practiced precision—attaching an oxygen mask and flushing the worker’s eyes—Alessio entered. He carried himself with the lethal stillness of a man who had stepped back into his old skin. In his hand was a tactical radio, its indicator light blinking amber.

"He's testing us," Alessio said quietly, watching Clara’s steady hands as she stabilized the worker. "Donati isn't striking with guns yet. He's trying to disrupt our life here, drain our resources, and force us to look in ten directions at once."

Clara wiped her hands on a towel and looked directly at her husband. "This isn't just disruption, Alessio. Caustic lye in the main lines means someone had to access the locked pump house on the upper ridge. That area is enclosed by an eight-foot chain-link fence."

"The lock wasn't cut," Bruno chimed in, holding up a heavy brass padlock he’d retrieved from the site. "It was opened with a master key."

A heavy silence descended upon the room. A master key meant someone inside the estate—or someone with intimate knowledge of their daily routines—had turned.

Alessio’s eyes narrowed. "Miller promised a secure perimeter."

"Miller’s men are watching the main roads," Clara noted sharply. "They don't know these woods. The old logging paths on the north ridge bypass all federal checkpoints."

Alessio reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. He dialed a secure burner line. "Agent Miller. Get your team up to the north reservoir. We have chemical sabotage and a breached perimeter."

"We just picked up unusual radio chatter near the old river depot," Miller’s voice crackled through the speaker. "Romano, stay at the main house. Don't go up that ridge."

Alessio hung up without answering. He turned to Bruno. "Arm the house guards. Put two men on the clinic doors and move Leo into the safe room beneath the wine cellar."

"Alessio, no," Clara said, stepping in front of him. "If you go up to that ridge alone, you walk right into whatever trap Donati has laid."

"I am not going alone, my heart," Alessio murmured, placing his palm gently against her cheek. "I am going with Bruno. And we are going to close that boundary permanently."

"Take me," Clara demanded. "If there are more casualties near the reservoir, you’ll need medical support."

Alessio looked into her fiery gray-green eyes, knowing better than to argue with Clara when her protective instincts were engaged. "Then stay behind me. Always."
