Chapter 28 - Blood and Iron

By sunrise, the rain had cleared, leaving the sky a crisp, brilliant blue over the Indiana valley. Federal agents were sweeping the estate, loading handcuffed mercenaries into transport vans and securing the perimeter.

Inside the main house, Clara sat at the dining room table with a laptop open. Despite the chaotic night, her medical and analytical mind was operating at peak performance.

"Miller," Clara called out as the lead agent entered the room carrying two cups of hot coffee. "Sit down. You need to see this."

Miller set a cup down in front of her. "What am I looking at?"

"While you were processing Victor Vance, I went through the encrypted server files Alessio recovered from Vance's mobile unit," Clara explained, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "Vance wasn't just trying to rebuild the Chicago syndicate. He was laundering money through a network of fraudulent medical supply companies in Illinois and Indiana."

Miller leaned in, his eyes widening. "Medical supplies?"

"Look at these invoice numbers," Clara pointed to the screen. "These are fake orders for high-end surgical equipment, billed to rural clinics—including ours. Vance was using our clinic's tax ID number to launder illegal arms revenue!"

Alessio stepped into the room, holding a sleepy Leo who was happily munching on an apple. "He was framing Clara's practice as the front for his financial network."

"If this had gone through," Clara said, looking up at Miller, "the Justice Department wouldn't just have arrested Alessio—you would have indicted me and shut down the clinic permanently."

Miller swore softly under his breath. "That snake thought of everything. If he couldn't kill you, he was going to destroy your reputation and strip you of your medical license."

"Not anymore," Clara said firmly. "I've already traced the primary transfer node. The remaining money—nearly four million dollars—is currently sitting in an escrow account at a regional bank in Indianapolis."

Alessio smiled proudly at his wife. "My wife is not just a brilliant clinician, Agent Miller. She is a tactical asset."

"So what happens to the four million?" Miller asked.

"Under federal forfeiture laws, if the money was laundered through a non-profit rural health organization, a portion of it can be legally redirected as court-ordered restitution," Clara stated calmly. "We're going to use Victor Vance's stolen money to fund free healthcare for every farming family in this county for the next twenty years."

Miller stared at Clara in absolute awe before letting out a hearty laugh. "Mrs. Romano, you are terrifying. I like it."

Bruno walked into the room, his arm in a sling from his underwater brawl with the mercenary, looking hesitant and deeply remorseful. "Alessio... Clara... the federal prosecutor is outside. I'm going to turn myself in for the gambling debt."

Alessio stood up, carrying Leo over to Bruno. He placed a strong hand on his best man's uninjured shoulder.

"You're not going anywhere, Bruno," Alessio said gently.

"But the debt—"

"Agent Miller and I spoke ten minutes ago," Alessio said. "The debt markers were held by Vance's illegal dummy company. Since the company was seized under federal RICO statutes, the debt is officially null and void. You are a free man, brother."

Bruno’s eyes welled with tears. He wrapped his arm around Alessio, pulling him into a tight embrace. "Thank you, Alessio. Thank you."

"Thank Clara," Alessio murmured. "She's the one who balanced the books."
