Chapter 26 - Night of the Fireflies

The revelation hit like a physical blow. If Miller’s team had a traitor, every tactical movement Alessio and the FBI were planning was already known to Victor Vance.

"We have to move Leo now," Clara said, her voice urgent as they rushed back to the main residential house through the dark orchard.

"The safe room isn't enough if they bring heavy explosive ordnance," Alessio said grimly. "We evacuate the property."

Suddenly, the night sky lit up with a brilliant flare launched high above the vineyard. Green light washed over the rows of grapevines, casting grotesque, elongated shadows.

BOOM!

An explosion rocked the eastern fence line as a modified pickup truck smashed through the wooden gates, followed by three dark SUVs with headlights off.

"They're early!" Bruno shouted, drawing his sidearm from his shoulder holster. "They bypassed the main road checkpoints!"

"Bruno! Take Clara and Leo into the old wine tunnels under the hill!" Alessio ordered, racking the slide of his assault rifle. "The tunnels lead out to the river bank two miles west! There's a motorboat moored under the willow trees!"

"I am not leaving you, Alessio!" Clara cried, grabbing his tactical vest.

"Clara, listen to me!" Alessio took her face in both hands, his eyes blazing with desperate love. "You are my heart. Leo is my soul. If you stay here, I will spend every second trying to shield you, and we will all die. Run to the river. I will draw them into the woods."

"Alessio—"

"I promised you my life, my honor, and my heart," Alessio whispered passionately, pressing his lips to hers in a fierce, fiery kiss. "I intend to keep that promise. Now go!"

Clara bit her lip, holding back tears, and nodded. She turned and sprinted toward the house, where Sister Mary was already holding a sleepy, frightened Leo wrapped in a warm blanket.

"Come on, Leo-bear," Clara whispered soothingly, scooping her son into her arms. "We're going on an adventure in the tunnels."

"Where's Daddy?" Leo whimpered, rubbing his eyes.

"Daddy is playing a game with the bad guys," Clara said, her voice strong despite the fear clutching her throat. "And Daddy always wins."

Outside, gunfire erupted—a terrifying symphony of automatic weapons fire and shattering glass. Alessio stood on the front porch, firing with terrifying precision, taking down the lead vehicles' tires and forcing the attackers to dismount into the open field.

Bruno led Clara, Leo, and Sister Mary down the narrow wooden stairs beneath the wine cellar floorboards. The air grew cold and damp, smelling of oak barrels and rich earth.

Above them, the house shook as another explosion detonated near the garage.

They navigated the dark stone tunnel using a single tactical flashlight. Behind them, the muffled echoes of gunfire began to fade as Alessio fell back deeper into the thick forest on the north ridge, leading the enemy away from his family like a phantom in the night.

After twenty minutes of breathless walking, they reached the iron grate at the end of the tunnel. Bruno pushed it open, and the fresh, cool air of the Wabash River rushed over them.

"The boat is right there," Bruno whispered, pointing toward a dark wooden dock obscured by hanging willow branches.

Suddenly, a red laser sight danced across Bruno’s chest.

"Going somewhere, Mrs. Romano?" a voice called out from the dark foliage.

Victor Vance stepped onto the wooden dock, holding a silenced submachine gun, flanked by two heavily armed mercenaries.
