Chapter 25 - The Oath and the Blade

The rain turned into a torrential downpour by 3:00 AM. Inside the rural clinic, the emergency lights flickered as lightning illuminated the glass windows.

A heavy vehicle slammed to a halt outside. Seconds later, the clinic doors burst open.

Two masked men carried a bleeding figure into the triage room, dropping him brutally onto the floor. Clara instantly rushed forward, grabbing her trauma kit.

"Get back!" one of the gunmen barked, raising an automatic pistol at Clara’s chest.

Alessio stepped smoothly out of the shadowed corner, his own weapon drawn and aimed directly at the gunman's temple. "Lower your weapon in my wife's clinic, or you won't live to see the sunrise."

The second gunman panicked, but the bleeding man on the floor groaned, raising a weak hand. "Stand down... both of you..."

The wounded man rolled over, revealing his face beneath a blood-soaked leather jacket. It was Marco Donati—the old Don himself, aged, gaunt, and coughing up dark blood from a severe thoracic wound.

Clara gasped, dropping to her knees beside the man who had ordered her husband’s assassination two years ago. "He's in hemorrhagic shock. High-caliber bullet wound to the left upper quadrant."

"Don't touch him, Clara," Alessio commanded, his voice tight with raw hatred. "He came here to finish what he started."

Donati looked up at Alessio through bloodshot eyes, a wet, rattling laugh escaping his lips. "Alessio... you fool... Vance betrayed us both..."

Clara checked Donati's pulse—it was thready and racing. "Alessio, if I don't operate right now, he dies in ten minutes."

"Let him die!" Alessio snapped, his control slipping for the first time. "He ordered the hit on my family! He hunted us for months!"

"I am a medical professional, Alessio!" Clara yelled back, her gray-green eyes flashing with fierce authority. "I took an oath! I don't choose who lives or dies on this operating table! If I let him die when I can save him, we are no better than Victor Vance!"

Alessio stared at his wife, his chest heaving. The silence in the clinic was deafening, broken only by the sound of rain hammering against the roof.

Slowly, Alessio lowered his weapon. "Bruno," he ordered without looking away from Clara. "Disarm his guards. Lock them in the storage room."

Clara immediately cut away Donati's shirt, exposing the entrance wound. "Sister Mary! Prep the suction and get three units of O-negative from the blood bank! Now!"

For two grueling hours, Clara worked under the harsh glare of the surgical lights. Her hands were steady, precise, and tireless. She clamped spurting arteries, sutured damaged tissue, and removed the flattened bullet from near Donati's spine. Alessio watched from the doorway, mesmerized by her grace under pressure—a woman fighting to save the life of her worst enemy simply because it was her duty.

As the final suture was tied, Donati slowly opened his eyes. The anesthesia was light, and his voice was a frail whisper.

"Why... why save me, girl?" Donati rasped.

Clara wiped sweat from her forehead with her sleeve, looking down at him with quiet dignity. "Because my husband is a good man, Mr. Donati. And I won't let your sins stain his hands or mine."

Donati looked past her to Alessio. A tear tracked through the dirt on the old tyrant's cheek. "Vance... Vance has a heavy strike team assembling at the old quarry... 0400 hours... He's coming to kill everyone... including your boy..."

Alessio stepped up to the surgical bed, leaning down close to Donati's ear. "Where is Victor getting his weapons?"

"The federal armory depot in Gary..." Donati choked out. "He has an insider... in Miller's unit..."

Alessio froze. He exchanged a terrifying look with Clara.

Miller's team was compromised.
