Chapter 3 - Return of the Master

The sun had barely crept over the frost-covered lawns of Greenwich, Connecticut, when the roar of a high-performance engine shattered the morning quiet.

A matte-black Gulfstream G650 jet had touched down at Westchester County Airport an hour prior. Now, a sleek black armored SUV tore up the long gravel driveway of the Whitfield estate, coming to a sudden, aggressive halt right in front of the main marble entrance.

Inside the mansion, the staff was already bustling. Diane Sinclair was in the grand parlor, adjusting a vase of white lilies, preparing her speech for when Richard eventually returned from his week-long Asian tour.

Suddenly, the heavy double oak doors of the main foyer slammed open with a noise like thunder.

Diane gasped, dropping her clip board.

Richard Whitfield stroided into the grand hall. He wore a dark tailored suit, but his tie was loosened, his white collar unbuttoned, and his dark hair slightly windswept. His eyes carried the lethal, icy fury of a man who had not slept in fourteen hours and was hunting for answers.

Behind him marched two men in charcoal suits—Arthur Vance, Richard’s chief global head of security and a former federal investigator, and a young tech specialist carrying a heavy metal case containing military-grade forensic hardware.

"M-Mr. Whitfield!" Diane stammered, rushing into the foyer, her face flushing red. "We... we were not expecting you back until Friday! Welcome home, sir!"

Richard didn't stop walking. He swept past her toward his private study, his long strides forcing Diane to trot to keep up.

"Gather every member of the domestic staff in the grand library in five minutes," Richard commanded, his voice cold and flat. "Including the groundskeepers, the kitchen team, and the night guards."

Diane’s heart skipped a beat. "Sir, if this is regarding the missing bracelet from yesterday... I handled it entirely. I spared the household any public embarrassment. The housekeeper, Maria, was dismissed quietly—"

Richard stopped dead in his tracks. He turned slowly, looking down at Diane with a glare that made the seasoned estate manager take an involuntary step back.

"You handled it?" Richard murmured softly. "You threw out a mother and her four-year-old child through a side entrance, accused her of felony theft without law enforcement verification, and you call that handling it?"

"She was the only one in the vault, sir!" Diane argued, trying to regain her footing. "The security footage proved—"

"Vance," Richard snapped, interrupting her instantly. "Seize all security server hard drives in this house. Lock down every exit. No one leaves this property. No one uses a mobile phone. Anyone who attempts to make a call will be terminated immediately and turned over to local authorities."

Diane’s eyes widened in sheer terror. "Richard, please! You're treating this like a crime scene!"

"It is a crime scene, Diane," Richard said, stepping uncomfortably close to her, his voice lowering to a whisper. "And I am about to find out who the real criminal is."
