Chapter 8 - Whispers of the Heart

Later that night, long after the last guest had departed and the ballroom lights were dimmed, rain began to fall softly against the tall glass windows of the estate.
Maria stood on the quiet stone terrace overlooking the dark rose gardens, holding her cashmere shawl tightly around her shoulders. Her heart was still beating wildly from Richard’s public declaration.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her.
Richard walked out onto the terrace, carrying two warm mugs of spiced tea. He handed one to Maria, his fingers brushing against hers, sending a shiver down her spine.
"I’m sorry if I overwhelmed you tonight," Richard said gently, looking out into the misty gardens. "I shouldn't have put you on the spot like that in front of two hundred people."
"Why did you say it, Richard?" Maria asked softly, her hazel eyes searching his face. "Was it just to embarrass Caroline?"
Richard placed his mug on the stone balustrade, turning to face her completely. He took both of her hands into his warm, firm palms.
"I haven't cared about Caroline in years," Richard said, his voice thick with emotion. "I said it because it’s the absolute truth. For years, I thought success meant building bigger companies, buying bigger houses, accumulating more power. But I was dying of loneliness in this giant glass box."
He reached up, his thumb gently caressing her cheek. "You and Matteo brought light into my dark world, Maria. You showed me what real dignity, real strength, and real love look like. I don't care about social status. I don't care about what gossip magazines say. I just want to spend the rest of my life making you and Matteo happy."
Tears glistened in Maria’s eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure joy.

"I loved you too, Richard," Maria admitted in a sweet whisper. "Even when I was just dusting your books... I always prayed that the lonely man who owned this house would find peace."
Richard smiled, pulling her gently into his arms. Beneath the rain-swept sky of Greenwich, they shared their first kiss—a sweet, passionate promise of a new future.
