Chapter 6 - A New Dawn at the Glass Palace

Three days later, a long white limousine pulled through the iron gates of the Whitfield estate in Greenwich.

When the car came to a stop at the front entrance, the entire domestic staff was standing on the grand marble steps—not lined up in rigid, fearful silence, but smiling warmly.

The chauffeur opened the door, and Maria stepped out, wearing an elegant, tailored navy blazer and trousers. Beside her, Matteo ran out holding his velvet rabbit and his new red toy car.

Thomas, the gardener, stepped forward first, holding a beautiful bouquet of fresh gardenias from the estate greenhouse.

"Welcome home, Ms. Delgado," Thomas said, his eyes glistening with emotional tears. "We are so sorry we didn't stand up for you that terrible day. We were cowards. But we are honored to work under your leadership."

Maria took the flowers, her heart overflowing with warmth. "Thank you, Thomas. The past is behind us. Today, we rebuild this house together."

For the next two months, the Whitfield estate underwent a quiet, profound transformation.

Under Maria’s management, the cold, sterile environment vanished. The strict, oppressive rules implemented by Diane were replaced with fair wages, reasonable shift hours, and mutual respect. The staff no longer walked on eggshells; laughter echoed in the grand kitchen, and the smell of fresh pastries and home-cooked meals replaced the artificial lavender scents of the past.

Moreover, a cozy, beautifully renovated three-bedroom cottage near the rose gardens became Maria and Matteo’s new home. For the first time in her life, Maria felt secure, safe, and deeply respected.

And then there was Richard.

The billionaire, who used to spend eleven months a year living out of hotel rooms in London, Tokyo, and San Francisco, suddenly started canceling non-essential international trips.

He found reasons to work from his Greenwich home office. He took morning coffee on the patio, watching Matteo play with the gardener’s dog on the lawn. He found excuses to drop by Maria’s office to discuss "estate budget reports" that could have easily been approved via email.

"You're staying home a lot lately, Mr. Whitfield," Maria remarked one afternoon as she placed a folder of vendor contracts on his desk.

Richard looked up from his laptop, a genuine, relaxed smile touching his lips. "I realized something recently, Maria. A man can build a multi-billion-dollar empire, but if he comes back to an empty, cold palace, he has nothing. This place finally feels like a home. And that’s because of you."

Maria felt a sudden blush warm her cheeks. For the first time, she looked into Richard’s deep blue eyes not as a servant looking at her employer, but as a woman looking at a man who had changed her world.
