Chapter 7 - The Gala of Shadows

Six months after Maria took over as Estate Manager, the Whitfield mansion prepared to host the biggest charity event of the New England high-society season: The Annual Autumn Children's Hospital Gala.
Over two hundred wealthy socialites, corporate titans, politicians, and celebrities were set to attend the black-tie dinner in the estate's grand ballroom.
Maria had spent weeks orchestrating every detail—from catering menus to security logistics. She wore a stunning, floor-length emerald green gown that Richard had personally ordered for her from a top designer in Paris, insisting that as Estate Manager, she was a host, not an employee.
As the evening reached its peak, music filled the glittering ballroom. Champagne glasses clinked under the crystal chandeliers.
Standing near the perimeter of the room, Maria kept a watchful eye on the service team. Suddenly, she noticed a tall, dark-haired woman standing near the bar, watching Richard with sharp, predatory eyes.
It was Caroline Whitfield—Richard’s ex-wife.
Caroline had arrived uninvited, accompanied by two high-society gossip columnists. She had heard rumors of Richard’s newfound domestic bliss and the prominent role a "former maid" was playing in his estate, and she had come to stir up scandal.
Caroline glided across the floor, her diamond necklace glittering maliciously, stopping right in front of Maria.
"So," Caroline sneered loudly, attracting the attention of nearby guests. "You're the little cleaning girl who managed to maneuver her way into running this house. Tell me, dear, do you still smell of bleach, or does the expensive green dress mask it?"
The surrounding conversation faltered. Several wealthy guests turned to stare.
Maria felt a surge of familiar anxiety, but she remembered who she was now. She stood tall, her posture flawless. "Mrs. Whitfield. Welcome to the estate. I hope you enjoy the charity auction tonight."
"Oh, spare me the polite act," Caroline scoffed, taking a sip of champagne. "A glorified maid managing a hundred-million-dollar estate? Richard must be losing his mind. Or perhaps you're serving him more than just coffee?"
Gasps went through the crowd.
Before Maria could answer, a heavy, authoritative hand rested gently on Maria’s waist.
Richard Whitfield stepped up beside Maria. His expression was darker than thunder, his eyes locked onto his ex-wife with lethal intensity.
"Caroline," Richard said, his voice ringing out clearly across the silent ballroom. "You were not invited tonight. Leave immediately."
"Richard, darling, I came to support the charity!" Caroline laughed nervously, trying to maintain her composure. "I was just pointing out the absurd comedy of having your domestic servant host high-society guests."
"Maria is not my servant," Richard announced loudly, his voice echoing under the high ceilings so that every single guest in the ballroom heard him clearly. "Maria Delgado is the heart of this estate, the most honorable person in this room, and the woman I love."
The ballroom went deathly quiet.
Maria turned her head, looking at Richard in complete, breathless shock. "Richard...?"
Richard didn't look at the crowd. He looked down at Maria, his blue eyes filled with absolute sincerity, tenderness, and unwavering devotion.

"I’m done hiding it, Maria," Richard whispered softly. "I have loved you since the day you stood up for your son in my driveway. I have loved you every day you made this cold house a home."
Caroline stood frozen in utter humiliation as security guards quietly stepped up and escorted her out of the mansion through the front entrance, while the guests broke into warm, enthusiastic applause for Richard and Maria.
