Chapter 4 - The Inquisition

The grand library was stiflingly quiet.
All fourteen staff members stood in a line before the massive stone fireplace. The chef was sweating; the young assistant housekeepers were trembling; the gardener held his cap tightly between his hands.
Richard Whitfield sat behind his heavy mahogany desk at the end of the room. Beside him, the tech specialist had connected a high-speed laptop directly to the mansion’s primary mainframe, overriding the local security software.
"Six years," Richard began, his deep voice carrying into every corner of the vast room. "Maria Delgado worked in this house for six years. When my ex-wife left, when this house was empty and lifeless, Maria was here. When my mother passed away three years ago, Maria was the one who personally cleaned her room with care and respect."
Richard stood up, resting his hands on the mahogany desk.
"And yet yesterday, when an item went missing, not one of you stood up for her. You watched her get marched out the servants' door like a common thief. Why?"
Silence hung heavy in the air.
Finally, Thomas, the elderly gardener, took a trembling step forward, lowering his cap. "Mr. Whitfield... Ms. Sinclair told us that if anyone defended Maria, or questioned the footage, we would be fired on the spot without a reference. Most of us have families to feed, sir. We... we were terrified."
Richard looked at Diane, who was standing near the door, her arms crossed tight, her face pale.
"I see," Richard said. He turned to his security chief. "Vance, what did the digital logs reveal?"
Arthur Vance stepped forward, holding a tablet. "Sir, we retrieved the uncompressed raw footage from the east hallway camera. The file provided to Ms. Sinclair yesterday was edited. Three minutes of video were deliberately cut out between 4:12 PM and 4:15 PM."
Gasps echoed across the room.
"Who edited the file?" Richard demanded.
"The footage was accessed from the central management terminal in Ms. Sinclair’s private office at 5:00 PM on Monday," Vance revealed coldly. "Furthermore, we ran a digital diagnostic on the master vault's electronic keycard lock. The vault wasn't opened by Maria’s master key yesterday afternoon. It was opened at 11:30 PM Sunday night... using Ms. Sinclair’s master override code."
The room erupted into shocked whispers.
Diane’s confidence shattered instantly. Her posture broke, and she took a step toward the door, but Vance’s secondary security guard stepped into the doorway, blocking her path.
"That's... that's a lie!" Diane shrieked, her voice cracking. "The system must have glitched! I didn't go into the vault on Sunday night!"
"We also pulled your bank records half an hour ago under corporate emergency protocol," Vance added relentlessly. "You have an offshore account in the Cayman Islands that received an wire transfer of $85,000 yesterday morning from a high-end black-market jewelry fence in Manhattan."
Diane dropped her handbag. It hit the hardwood floor with a heavy thud, spilling lipstick, keys, and compact powder across the floor.
Richard walked slowly out from behind his desk, stopping inches away from Diane.
"You stole my mother’s bracelet," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly soft. "You sold it to cover your gambling debts or lavish lifestyle, and then you framed a helpless woman who earned a fraction of your salary to cover your tracks."
"Richard... please..." Diane sobbed, falling to her knees, clutching at his trousers. "I was desperate! I made a mistake! I’ve served you for six years!"
"Do not touch me," Richard said, pulling his leg back with utter disgust. "Vance, call the Greenwich Police Department. File charges for grand larceny, evidence tampering, framing, and extortion. Ensure she is taken out of here in handcuffs through the main entrance where every neighbor can see her."

As the guards pulled the weeping estate manager to her feet, Richard turned back to the remaining household staff.
"Now," Richard commanded softly, "get my car ready. I have an apology to make."
