Chapter 13 - Whispers in the Orchard

That evening, as dusk settled over the Illinois fields, Marcus arrived at the blue house in a rugged pickup truck. After a brief briefing from Ethan, Marcus quietly set up perimeter motion sensors around the perimeter of the orchard and driveway, securing the small haven.

Ethan sat on the edge of Chloe's bed in the second-floor bedroom. The room smelled of lavender, wood, and dried summer flowers. Chloe was tucked beneath her blue quilt, her small hands holding onto a plush brown bear.

"Daddy, are you going to the big city?" Chloe asked, her voice small in the dim glow of the nightlight.

"Just for a little while, sweet girl," Ethan said, smoothing her hair back from her forehead. "I have to go fix an old drawing I made."

"Will you bring back the hot chocolate from the bakery with the red door?" she asked, her eyes drooping with sleepiness.

Ethan smiled, a lump forming in his throat. "I'll bring back the biggest cup they have. And we'll drink it right here under the giant tree."

"Okay," Chloe murmured, letting out a long, peaceful sigh as sleep took hold of her. "Don't let the cold rain come back, Dad."

"Never again, baby," Ethan whispered. "Never again."

He walked downstairs where Claire was waiting by the front door. She handed him a small leather bag filled with drive backups and his old master architectural seal.

"Be careful in the city, Ethan," Claire warned softly. "Victor is desperate. Desperate men do dirty things."

"He built his empire on glass and pretense," Ethan said, pulling on his jacket. "I built mine on bedrock. He can't break us, Claire."

Ethan stepped out into the cool night air, leaving Marcus on the porch watching the perimeter. As Ethan started his truck engine and pulled down the gravel driveway, he looked back in the rearview mirror. The blue house stood quiet, warm, and illuminated under the vast canopy of stars.

Two miles down the dark county highway, Ethan noticed two bright halogen headlights pull onto the road far behind him. The dark vehicle kept a steady distance, matching his speed through every winding curve through the cornfields.

Ethan’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. Victor hadn't just threatened him; he had put a tail on him the moment he left the property.

Ethan shifted down, hit the gas, and let the heavy truck roar down the highway toward the glowing horizon of Chicago. The fight for his family's home had officially begun.
