Chapter 8 - The Miracle in the Alps

The Clinique de la Source sat high on a snow-covered pine ridge overlooking Lake Geneva, Switzerland.
Inside the glass-domed operating suite on the third floor, Dr. Jean-Luc Bernard, one of the world’s foremost pioneers in robotic cardiac surgery, guided two high-precision mechanical arms through a tiny three-centimeter incision in Claire’s side.
Outside the operating suite, in a quiet, wood-paneled waiting lounge lined with glass walls looking out over the snow-capped Alps, Ethan walked back and forth across the rug.
He had walked three miles back and forth in four hours.
Chloe sat on a broad sheepskin armchair near the stone fireplace, drawing a picture with colored pencils on a pad of heavy paper. She was calm, untroubled, trusting entirely in the giant tree that was holding up her sky.
The heavy double doors of the operating suite swung open.
Dr. Bernard stepped out, pulling off his surgical cap. He was an older man with silver hair and kind, tired blue eyes.
Ethan stopped dead in his tracks, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Dr. Bernard...?"
Dr. Bernard looked at Ethan, then looked down at little Chloe, and a broad, beautiful smile broke across his face.
"Monsieur Mercer," Dr. Bernard said in his rich French accent. "The robotic valve deployment was an absolute, flawless success."
Ethan’s knees buckled. He grabbed the back of a sofa to keep from falling to the floor. "She... she survived?"
"Not only did she survive, but her cardiac pressure normalized within sixty seconds of the valve expansion," Dr. Bernard beamed. "Her heart is beating stronger right now than it has in ten years. She is awake in the recovery room, and she is already asking for her daughter."
Ethan covered his face with both hands, letting out a shattered, sobbing gasp of pure joy.
Chloe dropped her colored pencils and ran across the room, throwing her arms around Ethan’s legs. Ethan dropped to his knees, pulling his daughter into a fierce, joyous embrace, weeping openly as the warm light of the Swiss sun poured through the glass windows over them.

"Mom’s heart is fixed, Dad!" Chloe cheered, laughing happily against his neck.
"Yes, baby," Ethan sobbed, kissing her face over and over again. "Mom’s heart is fixed. We're going home."
