Chapter 16 - Siege at the Porch

A massive summer tempest had swept across the plains of Illinois, transforming the afternoon sky into a terrifying, swirling vault of bruised purple and charcoal gray. Rain lashed against the glass windows of the small blue house in sheets, driven by seventy-mile-per-hour wind gusts that bent the branches of the giant oak tree low to the earth.
Inside the darkened house, illuminated only by the flashes of lightning, Claire stood in the living room holding a heavy flashlight. Behind her, in the small pantry under the stairwell, Marcus had ushered Chloe and Barnaby, locking the interior latch.
"Stay inside, Chloe," Marcus whispered sternly, holding his service flashlight in one hand and an iron fire poker in the other. "Do not open this door for anyone except your dad or me."
"Is the cold rain back?" Chloe whispered through the crack in the door, holding the puppy tightly against her chest.
"No, sweetie," Marcus said gently. "Just a little summer noise."
Outside, through the blinding curtain of rain on the front porch, three dark luxury SUVs pulled onto the soaked lawn, their mud tires tearing up the green grass beneath the giant tree.
Four men in heavy waterproof raincoats dismounted, led by Victor’s corporate fixer, a cold-eyed man named Henderson. Henderson walked up the wooden porch steps, his heavy boots thudding against the deck.
He didn't knock. He struck the wooden door with the butt of his heavy flashlight.
"Mrs. Mercer!" Henderson called out over the howling wind. "Open the door! We have the court-ordered land transfer documents! Sign them now, and this all goes away!"
Claire stepped into the foyer, standing side-by-side with Marcus as the lightning illuminated their resolute faces through the frosted door glass.
"Get off my porch!" Claire shouted back, her voice firm, clear, and ringing with absolute strength. "You have no legal right to be here!"
"Your husband is currently a fugitive in Chicago, Mrs. Mercer!" Henderson lied, his voice cold and metallic over the rain. "The police are searching for him. If you sign the land authorization, Mr. Sterling will drop all criminal charges and ensure Ethan walks free!"
"My husband is not a fugitive!" Claire countered, stepping right up to the window. "And we will never give you this land!"
Henderson turned to his men. "Break the lock."
Two thugs stepped forward with heavy steel crowbars, jamming them into the oak doorframe.
Marcus stepped in front of Claire, racking the slide of his heavy flashlight, his shoulders set like iron. "Touch that door, and you won't walk back down those steps."
Suddenly, down the long, mud-slicked gravel driveway, high-beam halogen headlights cut through the torrential rain like white spears.
A heavy Ford truck roared down the driveway at breakneck speed, its tires throwing up ten-foot arcs of brown water and mud. The truck didn't slow down as it crested the lawn—it slammed directly into the side of Henderson's lead SUV, pushing the heavy vehicle twenty feet across the muddy yard until it slammed into a fence post with a crushing crunch of metal.

The truck door flew open into the howling storm.
Ethan Mercer stepped out into the rain.
