Chapter 2 - The Fifteen-Year Lie

The private dining room on the upper floor of Aster House was silent. Ethan had ordered the entire floor cleared, sending security guards to block the elevators and paying the management a sum that silenced any prospective complaints.

Claire sat on a plush velvet sofa, wrapped in a heavy wool blanket Ethan had demanded from the staff. A warm cup of herbal tea rested in her lap, but her hands were too weak to raise it to her lips. Beside her, Chloe lay fast asleep, her small head resting on Claire’s thigh, her small body finally surrendering to full stomach and exhaustion.

Ethan stood near the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the glittering skyline of Chicago. His hands were tucked into his pockets, his posture stiff, but his dark eyes were locked onto Claire’s face through the reflection in the glass.

"Fifteen years," Ethan said, his voice tight and fractured. "Fifteen years, Claire. You disappeared from Geneva without a trace. I searched for you for six months."

"Did you, Ethan?" Claire asked softly, a faint, bitter smile touching her lips. "Or did your father's lawyers search for me to make sure I signed the non-disclosure agreements before your company went public?"

Ethan turned around, his brow furrowing. "What non-disclosure agreements? What are you talking about?"

Claire reached inside her faded trench coat and pulled out a small, frayed leather pouch. From inside, she drew a yellowed piece of paper, folded into tight squares, and held it out across the mahogany coffee table.

Ethan stepped forward, taking the document. As his eyes scanned the formal legal typography dated fifteen years prior, his face drained of all color.

SPECIAL SHAREHOLDER SETTLEMENT & WAIVER OF PROPRIETARY INTEREST: Between Mercer Enterprises Inc. (Represented by Richard Mercer) and Claire Bennett. In exchange for the full surrender of all patents regarding the Automated Urban Transit Matrix, Claire Bennett hereby relinquishes all rights to Mercer Enterprises...

"This is my father's signature," Ethan stammered, his mind racing. "This... this says you created the foundational algorithm for the Chicago Transit Expansion."

"I didn't just create it, Ethan," Claire whispered, her dark eyes flashing with a sudden, faint spark of old fire. "I wrote it in that small blue cottage in Geneva while you were working two jobs to pay for our rent. It was my master’s thesis. It was my life's work."

Ethan sank into the armchair opposite her, staring at the paper in horror.

When Ethan was twenty-six, his father, Richard Mercer, had miraculously secured a fifty-million-dollar venture capital deal that launched Mercer Urban Systems into the stratosphere. Richard had told Ethan that the algorithm had been purchased from a tech think-tank in California, and that Claire had simply walked away from their relationship because she couldn't handle Ethan's relentless work hours.

"My father told me you left me for someone else," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, terrifying low tone. "He showed me a letter signed with your name."

"Your father came to my apartment two days after I found out I was pregnant," Claire said quietly, looking down at sleeping Chloe. "He brought two corporate attorneys and a team of private investigators. He told me that if I stayed in your life, or if I tried to claim ownership of the algorithm, he would tie me up in intellectual property lawsuits until I was bankrupt and in prison for corporate espionage."

She took a shaky breath, pressing a pale hand against her left chest.

"He told me you knew," Claire added, looking up at him with fresh tears glittering in her eyes. "He told me that you had agreed to swap our relationship for the funding. He said you chose the empire over me."

"I DIDN'T KNOW!" Ethan roared, slamming his fist onto the side of the chair so hard the room shook.

Chloe stirred in her sleep, whimpering softly. Instantly, Ethan dropped to his knees, lowering his head, his hands clenching into tight fists on the carpet.

"I didn't know, Claire," Ethan wept quietly, his chest heaving. "God help me, I swear on my life, I thought you abandoned me. I spent fifteen years building this company because I thought if I became powerful enough, I would finally understand why you left."

Claire looked down at the billionaire crime-and-commerce boss kneeling at her feet, seeing the genuine, shattered agony in his eyes. The weight of a fifteen-year misconception hung between them, heavy and suffocating.

"It doesn't matter anymore, Ethan," Claire murmured, her voice failing as she leaned back against the sofa cushions, her breathing becoming shallow and erratic. "The company is built. Richard Mercer died five years ago... and I am running out of time."

"What do you mean?" Ethan asked, his heart seizing with sudden terror. "Chloe said... she said your heart—"

May you like

Before Claire could answer, her eyes rolled back into her head. Her cup of tea slipped from her fingers, shattering against the mahogany table, and her body collapsed sideways onto the velvet sofa.

"CLAIRE!" Ethan screamed.
