Chapter 7 - The Flight to Geneva

By 6:00 AM, a convoy of armored ambulances and black SUVs swept onto the tarmac at Gary/Chicago International Airport.
Under the cover of a thick morning fog, Claire Bennett was carefully transferred from an advanced mobile ICU unit onto Ethan’s private Boeing business jet, which had been converted into a flying medical suite complete with a portable heart-lung machine and two attending cardiologists.
Marcus Mercer had been arrested ninety minutes earlier at his Lake Forest estate after FBI agents intercepted encrypted text messages linking his bank accounts to the hit team sent to the penthouse. The corporate empire of Mercer Urban Systems was in complete freefall, but Ethan didn't care about the stocks, the news crews, or the board meetings.
He sat beside Claire’s specialized medical bed in the main cabin of the jet as the aircraft climbed smoothly above the gray clouds, heading south toward a private cardiovascular research institute in Geneva, Switzerland.
Claire was awake, though extremely weak. She wore a soft white hospital gown, her dark hair combed back neatly from her pale face.
She held Ethan’s hand on her right, while five-year-old Chloe sat on the edge of the bed, holding her left thumb.
"Where are we going?" Claire whispered, looking out the oval window at the brilliant golden sunlight pouring over the ocean of white clouds below.
"We're going to Switzerland, Claire," Ethan said gently, lifting her frail hand to his lips and pressing a warm kiss against her knuckles. "Dr. Hayes found a surgical team in Geneva that specializes in minimally invasive robotic valve replacements. You don't have to wait two weeks. They can operate tomorrow without opening your chest."
Claire looked at him, her dark eyes filled with a quiet, lingering disbelief. "Ethan... the company... the news this morning said the stock collapsed thirty percent. Your uncle ruined everything."
Ethan let out a soft, genuine laugh—the first real laugh he had uttered in fifteen years.
"Let it collapse, Claire," Ethan said softly. "I filed the paperwork with the SEC two hours ago. I resigned as CEO. I transferred fifty-one percent of my personal equity into a trust for Chloe, and I surrendered the remaining core algorithm patents back to your name."
Claire gasped faintly. "Ethan... that was your entire life's work."
Ethan looked from Claire’s delicate face down to his daughter, who was smiling softly while tracing the lines on her mother’s palm.
"No, Claire," Ethan whispered, his eyes shining with pure, unadulterated devotion. "You and Chloe were my life's work. I was just too blind and foolish to realize it until I found my daughter asking for bread at a dinner table."
Claire looked into his eyes, seeing no trace of the ambitious, hard-hearted corporate developer who had ruled Chicago. She saw only the boy from the blue porch in Geneva—the man who loved her before the world got in the way.

She squeezed his hand with the last bit of strength in her fingers, tears of pure relief spilling over her dark lashes.
"Welcome back, Ethan," she whispered.
