Chapter 9 - The Blue Porch Revisited

Eight months later.

Summer had arrived in Geneva, Illinois.

The small, quiet suburban street was lined with ancient oak trees, their heavy green leaves shading the historic wooden homes. At the end of the quiet lane stood a two-story cottage, painted a soft, beautiful cornflower blue, with a wide wraparound porch, white railings, and a lush garden filled with blooming red roses.

Ethan Mercer had bought back the old blue cottage six months ago, spending three hundred thousand dollars to meticulously restore every detail of the house where he and Claire had first fallen in love fifteen years ago.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the front porch was filled with the sounds of laughter and the smell of fresh lemon tart.

Frank Bennett—Claire’s uncle and only living relative—sat in a rocking chair, drinking iced tea while watching five-year-old Chloe playing in the garden with a golden retriever puppy Ethan had bought her for her sixth birthday.

Claire stood near the porch railing, wearing a simple white linen sundress. Her hair was full and dark, her skin glowing with a healthy, vibrant pink, her eyes clear, bright, and full of life.

Beside her stood Ethan, wearing a simple polo shirt and jeans. He looked younger, relaxed, his broad shoulders free from the crushing weight of the corporate world.

After the liquidation of Mercer Urban Systems, Ethan had launched a new, non-profit urban housing foundation—The Chloe Bennett Infrastructure Trust—which focused entirely on building sustainable, affordable housing and free medical clinics for low-income families across the Midwest.

"Look at her, Ethan," Claire whispered softly, pointing toward the garden.

Chloe was sprinting through the green grass, her laughter ringing out like silver bells as the golden puppy chased her around a big oak tree. She wasn't wearing taped sandals anymore. She wore a pretty yellow dress, her blonde hair tied with bright blue ribbons.

"She’s happy, Claire," Ethan said, stepping up behind her and wrapping his arms around her waist, resting his chin gently on her shoulder. "We’re all happy."

Claire leaned back against his chest, placing her hands over his. She could feel the deep, steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beating against her back—a rhythm that matched the strong, healthy beat inside her own chest.

"Do you ever miss it?" Claire asked quietly, looking toward the horizon where the distant skyline of Chicago was barely visible. "The towers? The boardrooms? Being the architect of the city?"

Ethan turned her around in his arms, looking into her dark, beautiful eyes with a devotion so complete it made her breath catch.

"I didn't build anything real in those towers, Claire," Ethan said softly. "The only empire worth building is right here on this porch."
