Chapter 4 - The Safe House in Yellow Springs

The silver sedan drove for over an hour, leaving the sprawling suburbs of Columbus behind and heading into the dark, wooded hills of Yellow Springs, Ohio.

The driver, Marcus, drove with calm expertise, constantly checking his rearview mirror for tailing headlights.

"My sister Mae called ahead," Marcus said, glancing back at Leah through the mirror. "We're taking you to an old farmhouse owned by our family. It's off the grid. No Wi-Fi, no cell towers nearby."

They pulled up to a small, secluded wooden cottage hidden behind tall pine trees.

Inside, the cabin was warm, heated by a wood-burning stove. A retired pediatrician—Dr. Helen Vance, a close friend of Mae's family—was already waiting inside with formula, warm blankets, and a medical kit.

For the next three hours, Dr. Vance carefully examined baby Leo, checking his heart rate, lungs, and reflex responses, while dressing Leah’s surgical site with fresh bandages.

"Your son is completely healthy, Leah," Dr. Vance said gently, handing the sleeping baby back to her. "And as for you, your incision is clean, but you are severely exhausted. You need rest."

Leah sat on the soft velvet sofa, nursing her son, feeling safe for the first time in nine months.

"Dr. Vance," Leah said, looking up. "Do you have a secure, offline laptop?"
