Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

By noon the next day, Doreen Carver held a emergency press conference on the steps of the Franklin County Courthouse in downtown Columbus.
Dressed in black, standing beside a visibly nervous Nathan, Doreen wept bitterly before a dozens of news cameras.
"My daughter-in-law, Leah Carver, suffered a violent psychotic break shortly after giving birth," Doreen cried into the microphones. "She abducted her newborn infant from Briar Glen Maternity Pavilion and vanished into the night. We fear for the child's life! A statewide Amber Alert has been issued!"
Suddenly, a loud, clear voice cut through the gathered media crowd.
"The only person lying here is you, Doreen!"
The reporters whirled around.
Walking up the marble steps of the courthouse was Leah Carver. She wore a simple gray coat, her dark hair tied back, holding baby Leo securely in a front-facing baby carrier.
Beside her walked two high-profile federal agents from the Department of Justice, accompanied by Simone and a legal team from the Ohio Attorney General’s office.
"Leah?!" Nathan turned pale as paper. "What are you doing?!"
"I’m ending this, Nathan," Leah said calmly, stopping ten feet away on the courthouse steps.

Doreen’s face contorted with rage. "Guards! Arrest her! She's crazy! She's holding the baby!"
"Stand down," Federal Agent Miller commanded, stepping between Doreen and the county sheriff’s deputies. "Mrs. Doreen Carver, Dr. Celia Rusk, and Mr. Nathan Carver... you are all under federal arrest for human trafficking, medical fraud, falsification of public records, and conspiracy."
